Biden Interview Becomes Hotly Debated

Republicans are intensifying scrutiny over explosive revelations from former President Joe Biden’s recent interview with The New York Times, where he attempted to defend his final weeks in office and clarify his role in a controversial wave of last-minute pardons—only to raise more questions in the process.

At the heart of the backlash is Biden’s admission that while he “approved every pardon,” he “did not individually approve” each specific recipient. Instead, he described signing off on general “standards” for clemency, leaving staff to manage the specifics—an approach that culminated in at least some pardons being formalized through autopen, a mechanical signature device used in lieu of a live signature.

That detail has set off alarm bells on Capitol Hill, particularly given the lack of transparency surrounding Biden’s cognitive decline in the final year of his presidency. Critics now question whether senior White House staff took advantage of Biden’s diminished awareness to enact a sweeping set of pardons—including those for Liz Cheney, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and his own son, Hunter Biden—without the president’s full knowledge or explicit consent.

“Every Democrat in Washington better get asked about this tomorrow,” wrote GOP strategist Matt Whitlock on Sunday night. House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-KY) confirmed that his committee will continue to investigate what he described as “a historic scandal,” and pledged to pursue accountability over what he called a “gross abuse of executive power.”

The Times report highlighted internal communications involving former White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, who approved use of the autopen after presenting Biden with a condensed summary list of pardons. Biden aides reportedly viewed the use of the device as “routine.”

But Republicans aren’t buying that explanation. Former President Donald Trump openly questioned whether Biden knew what was being signed in his name—not only in relation to pardons, but also policy directives such as expansions of asylum protections and border-related orders. “Who was operating the autopen?” Trump asked in a recent press briefing. “You know who signed it? Radical left lunatics who were running our country.”

Trump’s remarks echo growing concerns about the extent of control exercised by Biden’s inner circle during his final year in office. Former Democratic operatives are now breaking ranks.

Ex-DNC fundraiser Lindy Li accused longtime Biden aide Anthony Bernal of acting as a behind-the-scenes power broker, claiming she witnessed him running the White House “like he was a king.” Li blasted Bernal’s alleged efforts to avoid congressional subpoenas and labeled him part of a “cover-up” that shielded the administration’s decision-making from public view.

Bernal has also been described as a “Wizard of Oz-type figure” by David Hogg, a former Democratic Party co-chair, in a hidden camera video released by Project Veritas. “That was an open secret,” Hogg said, calling Bernal “scary” and suggesting many staffers actively avoided him.
