Hungary and China celebrated a new chapter in their diplomatic and cultural relations as Blossoms of the Dynasty, a highly acclaimed Chinese television series, prepares to premiere on Hungarian television. The occasion also marked the signing of a media partnership between Chinese and Hungarian broadcasters in Budapest.
At the signing ceremony, Dániel Papp, CEO of Hungary’s public media foundation MTVA, emphasized the event’s symbolic significance. ‘We’re celebrating a moment when media becomes a tangible bridge between two cultures,’ he said, calling it a rare and meaningful step between distant nations pursuing a shared vision.
Papp highlighted the deep-rooted connections between Hungarian identity and Asia, despite Hungary’s millennium-long history in Europe. He noted that traces of Hungary’s Asian heritage remain present in folk traditions and national mentality, shaped by a nomadic past that values freedom, independence, and adaptability. ‘This shared origin is what unites us and underpins our mutual successes,’ he said.
The historical drama, Blossoms of the Dynasty, brings not only visual richness to Hungarian audiences but also insight into China’s rich heritage, societal values, and worldview. Papp expressed gratitude to all who made the agreement possible and voiced hope that future collaborations might include joint productions or co-productions.

Boglárka Illés, State Secretary for Bilateral Relations at the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, noted that last year, Hungary and China elevated their diplomatic relationship to a ‘comprehensive strategic partnership’. She credited Hungary’s early engagement in China’s Belt and Road Initiative in 2015 as a key step in this evolution, which helped position China as Hungary’s top investor in 2023.
Illés also praised the global impact of the series, which has already attracted over 1.1 billion viewers worldwide. Beyond its cinematic beauty, she said, the series offers a unique window into Chinese culture and traditions.
Gong Tao, Chinese Ambassador to Hungary, echoed these sentiments, calling the series more than just a television export—it is a new milestone in the ongoing dialogue between civilizations. Zhang Su, one of the series’ representatives, explained that Blossoms of the Dynasty showcases Chinese history, fashion, and the solidarity of contemporary women, all woven through the lens of Eastern aesthetics. The production has been met with wide acclaim both at home and internationally.
This media collaboration signals not only a step forward for Hungary–China cultural relations but also the growing role of storytelling in diplomacy. As the series prepares to air, it stands as a reminder of the soft power potential embedded in cultural exchange.
