A 24-year-old former Texas Southern University football player was gunned down after a fight broke out in a Houston apartment complex parking garage, police said.
Tyler Martinez was shot multiple times during a violent altercation on Friday night, July 11, at the 4460 Mac apartments where he lived. According to Houston Police Lt. Amber Khan, the fight turned deadly after the other man involved pulled out a gun and opened fire.
Emergency crews from the Houston Fire Department arrived around 8:10 p.m., but Martinez was already gravely wounded. He died at the scene.
Police identified the suspected shooter as 22-year-old Isaac Jasper Robinson, a fellow resident of the same apartment complex and, according to reports, a licensed security guard. Investigators say Robinson fled the scene but later turned himself in. He’s now charged with murder.
KHOU 11 and ABC13 reported that Robinson admitted to the shooting. Court documents revealed that a woman close to Robinson allegedly handed him the firearm used in the killing, though she hasn’t been publicly named or charged.
Witnesses told police that Martinez had pinned Robinson to the ground during the altercation and was walking away when Robinson pulled the trigger. He was shot three times in the torso.
Martinez, who played four seasons as a defensive tackle for Texas Southern University, was remembered by family and friends over the weekend. He was still listed on the 2023 team roster.
Robinson, who reportedly has no prior criminal history, appeared in court on July 12. His bond was set at $150,000.
Police have not released any further details about the motive behind the fight.
