(DCNF)—House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said Wednesday on Fox News’ “Hannity” that the “odds” of requesting former First Lady Jill Biden to testify in the autopen investigation have “increased significantly.”
On Sunday, Biden told The New York Times that he had granted staff use of his autopen because he was granting “clemency to so many people.” With former aides already being questioned, Fox News’ Sean Hannity asked Comer whether he would consider calling Jill Biden after her former chief of staff, Anthony Bernal, pleaded the Fifth before lawmakers.
“Well, I think the odds of calling in Jill Biden increased significantly today,” Comer said. “We had her chief of staff, her self-proclaimed work husband, there for what we plan to be an eight-hour deposition. He kept invoking the Fifth Amendment and his lawyer finally said, ‘You can ask all the questions you want. We’re gonna invoke the Fifth Amendment on every question.’”
“So we need to know was Jill Biden the one calling the shots while Joe Biden was incapacitated? Anthony Bernal had an opportunity to answer those questions today. He chose to invoke the Fifth Amendment. So I would say her odds significantly increased,” Comer added.
In May, Comer said the committee had called for the depositions of four former Biden staffers and former White House physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor to answer questions about the influence that officials may have had over Biden during his time in office.
The deposition requests came as questions about Biden’s mental fitness gained renewed attention in the media. CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’ Alex Thompson released a book in which sources said there were serious concerns about Biden’s cognitive decline — at one point, some allegedly considered placing him in a wheelchair.
Just days before the book’s official release, Biden’s personal office disclosed he had been diagnosed with “a more aggressive form” of prostate cancer, which had already metastasized to the bone. The timeline of the diagnosis prompted further scrutiny, with doctors like former Obama adviser Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel speculating that Biden likely had the disease as early as the start of his presidency in 2021.
Before leaving the White House in January, Biden announced a series of controversial pardons, including for high-profile figures such as former White House Chief Medical Advisor Anthony Fauci, Gen. Mark Milley, and members of his own family. Biden also commuted the sentences of nearly 1,500 individuals, including three Democratic politicians and several public officials.
Both O’Connor and Anthony Bernal met with lawmakers in July and invoked the Fifth Amendment when asked about Biden’s mental state and their time in the White House.
