Democrats can’t stand when Republican governors actually enforce immigration laws.
They’ll do anything to undermine border security efforts.
And Florida Democrats just got exposed after they made this outrageous move against DeSantis.
Democrats Sue DeSantis Over ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ Access
Five Democrat legislators in Florida filed a lawsuit against Governor Ron DeSantis after being denied access to the state’s new immigration detention facility dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz.”
The lawmakers – State Senators Shevrin Jones and Carlos Guillermo Smith, along with State Representatives Anna Eskamani, Angie Nixon, and Michele Rayner – were turned away from the facility on July 3 when they showed up demanding an unannounced inspection.¹
These same Democrats who’ve spent years attacking DeSantis for his America First immigration policies suddenly want to play oversight when it comes to a facility designed to help President Trump’s deportation efforts.
The detention center can house up to 3,000 detainees and was built in just eight days in the Everglades to support Trump’s mass deportation operations.²
It’s estimated to cost $450 million annually, with Florida footing the bill and getting reimbursed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.³
DeSantis’ Office Calls Out Democrat Stunt
DeSantis’ team didn’t mince words when responding to the Democrats’ lawsuit.
Deputy Press Secretary Sierra Dean dismissed the legal action as “frivolous” and said the state “looks forward to quickly dispensing with this dumb lawsuit.”⁴
DeSantis spokeswoman Molly Best said, “Yesterday, the Florida Division of Emergency Management invited all Florida legislators to tour Alligator Alcatraz this weekend. Today, five Democrat legislators responded by filing a frivolous lawsuit demanding access to Alligator Alcatraz.”⁵
The governor’s office pointed out that all Florida legislators had already been invited to a scheduled tour of the facility this weekend.
But that wasn’t good enough for the Democrat lawmakers, who insisted on their right to conduct “unannounced inspections” without any coordination with security protocols.
“The law is unambiguous: We have the right to inspect detention facilities at any time, without prior notice,” the petitioners said in a statement.⁶
They argued that “oversight cannot be choreographed” and dismissed the offered weekend tour as being “about containment” rather than transparency.⁷
Democrats Show Their True Colors
The lawsuit reveals exactly what these Democrats really think about immigration enforcement.
In their lawsuit, the Democrats used extreme language to describe the detention facility, calling it comparable to concentration camps – the same inflammatory rhetoric they always deploy against effective border security measures.⁸
These are the same Democrats who’ve been silent for years while the Biden administration separated families, lost track of thousands of unaccompanied minors, and allowed cartels to exploit our broken immigration system.
But now that DeSantis is working with Trump to actually enforce the law, suddenly they’re concerned about “transparency” and “oversight.”
Rayner also claimed they wanted to investigate reports of flooding and safety problems at the facility.⁹
But if Democrats were truly concerned about immigrant welfare, they’d be supporting efforts to secure the border and prevent the dangerous journeys that put migrants at risk in the first place.
The Real Reason Democrats Are Furious
The truth is that Democrats can’t stand seeing effective immigration enforcement in action.
“Alligator Alcatraz” represents everything they oppose – a state taking decisive action to help federal authorities enforce immigration law and protect American communities.
DeSantis built the facility under emergency powers he declared in January 2023 to address what he called massive illegal immigration into Florida.¹⁰
DeSantis has repeatedly renewed that emergency order, which allows the state to take “necessary action” to address the crisis.
Florida law enforcement officers working under the federal 287(g) program will bring detained immigrants to the facility, where they’ll be held for potential deportation.
This is exactly the kind of cooperation between state and federal authorities that makes mass deportation possible.
Environmental Groups Join the Attack
It’s not just Democrat politicians trying to shut down the facility.
Environmental groups have also filed a federal lawsuit seeking to block the facility, claiming it threatens protected ecosystems in the region.¹¹
The lawsuit was filed by Friends of the Everglades and the Center for Biological Diversity – the same left-wing groups that oppose every infrastructure project that doesn’t align with their radical agenda.
These environmental activists are using the same playbook they’ve used for decades to block important projects through endless litigation and regulatory delays.
They’re more concerned about protecting swampland than protecting American communities from the consequences of illegal immigration.
Democrats’ Lawsuit Backfires
By filing this lawsuit, Florida Democrats have exposed themselves as opponents of effective immigration enforcement.
They’re not interested in genuine oversight – they want to obstruct and undermine operations that help remove illegal aliens from American communities.
The timing of their lawsuit makes their political motivations crystal clear.
They waited until after Trump took office and began implementing his deportation agenda to suddenly develop concerns about detention facility conditions.
Where was their outrage when the Biden administration was housing unaccompanied minors in overcrowded facilities?
Where were the lawsuits when border patrol agents were overwhelmed by the surge of illegal crossings?
DeSantis and his team are smart to dismiss this lawsuit as the political theater it really is.
The governor has consistently delivered on his promises to protect Florida from the consequences of federal immigration failures.
And he’s not going to let a handful of Democrat legislators interfere with efforts to help Trump make good on his deportation promises.
Florida voters elected DeSantis to be a strong leader who puts America First – not someone who caves to pressure from open-borders activists disguised as concerned legislators.
