GRAPEVINE, TX – Two men in their 40s are facing charges after allegedly breaking into multiple businesses in Grapevine and Arlington using a sledgehammer. Authorities report that Anthony Johnson, 40, and Perry Busby, 41, are connected to at least ten burglaries that occurred over six weeks, targeting eight establishments in Arlington and two in Grapevine.
Local police departments in Arlington and Grapevine collaborated on the investigation, noting a consistent method used by the suspects. The duo, dubbed the “Sledgehammer Burglars,” reportedly struck convenience stores during early morning hours, stealing cash and cigarettes. Surveillance footage from a June 11 incident at Grapevine’s Max Corner Store captured masked individuals wielding a sledgehammer to breach the counter, seizing approximately $3,000 worth of cigarettes and the entire cash register.
Earlier in May, police responded to a similar break-in at a gas station on Grapevine Mills Parkway. Footage showed two masked men employing identical tactics. A detective in Grapevine recognized the suspects’ descriptions from Arlington’s burglary cases, leading to further investigation.
Key evidence emerged when Arlington’s Flock cameras recorded a white Ford Taurus, identified as the suspects’ vehicle, registered to Busby in Johnson County. Investigators also utilized a photograph from Busby’s social media to confirm the connection between him and the vehicle.
Last week, Grapevine police placed a GPS tracker on the Taurus. On July 9, detectives traced the vehicle to Arlington’s Lucky One Food Mart. Officers observed the two men breaking in with a sledgehammer and swiftly intervened. Busby and Johnson attempted to evade capture by hiding in the ceiling of a store bathroom, damaging the sink and ceiling tiles in the process, but were ultimately apprehended.
Further investigation revealed that social media photos helped link articles of clothing worn by the suspects to those seen in surveillance videos. Busby, who has a history of burglary arrests, is believed to have used a similar modus operandi in past crimes.
