Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials and Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-CA) publicly clashed following a recent enforcement operation in Carpinteria, California, which resulted in dozens of arrests and the rescue of migrant children.
The confrontation escalated when ICE accused Carbajal of doxing an ICE agent during the protest—an action the agency claims led to the agent being injured.
Last week, Carbajal took to X to sharply criticize ICE’s tactics during the operation.
He alleged that agents used militarized and unnecessarily aggressive methods against local farmworkers and peaceful protesters.
Carbajal also emphasized his congressional oversight role but claimed he was denied access to observe the enforcement activities.
ICE pushed back on these claims, describing Carbajal as part of a violent mob that interfered with law enforcement efforts.
According to the agency, Carbajal was among protesters who threw rocks at officers executing a search warrant at a marijuana cultivation facility.
During the altercation, one ICE agent sustained a serious laceration to his left hand that required emergency room treatment.
A press release from the agency included photographs documenting the extent of the agent’s injuries.
In addition, ICE accused Carbajal of doxxing the injured agent by displaying his business card to the crowd—an act ICE claims incited further violence.
The card was reportedly given to Carbajal by an ICE public affairs specialist during the raid.
The Department of Homeland Security issued a formal statement condemning Carbajal’s conduct.
Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin described the congressman’s actions as “downright un-American” and “abominable” and accused him of orchestrating a political stunt disguised as congressional oversight.
McLaughlin highlighted a 700 percent rise in assaults on ICE agents, linking the surge in violence partly to encouragement from lawmakers like Carbajal.
The enforcement operation itself resulted in the arrest of 361 individuals present illegally in the U.S.
Among those arrested were several with extensive criminal records, facing charges that included rape, kidnapping, serial burglary, attempted rape, attempted child molestation, DUI and hit-and-run offenses.
Authorities also rescued fourteen migrant children from conditions that suggested exploitation, forced labor or human trafficking.
During the raid, ICE officers confronted a hostile crowd of approximately 500 rioters who threw rocks and other objects at law enforcement personnel and vehicles.
The agency emphasized the significant dangers their officers routinely face during such enforcement actions in communities hostile to immigration enforcement.
Carbajal has not publicly acknowledged the injury sustained by the ICE employee and continues to characterize the protesters as peaceful.
He further criticized ICE’s tactics as excessive and inappropriate under the circumstances.
Carbajal has represented California’s 24th congressional district since 2017, a region with a large agricultural economy and a significant immigrant population.
As an immigrant, he has frequently advocated for immigrant rights and criticized federal immigration enforcement, positioning himself as a vocal critic of ICE policies.
The Trump administration had significantly ramped up efforts to combat illegal immigration, increasing enforcement actions and prioritizing border security, which often led to clashes with lawmakers like Carbajal who opposed aggressive tactics in sanctuary states like California.
The investigation into immigration violations and possible child labor abuses uncovered during the Carpinteria raid remains ongoing.
Federal authorities have pledged to release additional information as it becomes available, underscoring the complexity and seriousness of the case.
