Political analyst Mark Halperin tore into The New York Times on Monday for its blatantly one-sided reporting on former President Joe Biden’s use of an autopen to issue clemency orders—a move that reeks of hypocrisy and journalistic malpractice. Halperin, appearing on The Morning Meeting, slammed the Times for deliberately excluding Republican voices and legal experts from its Sunday article, accusing the outlet of abandoning basic journalistic standards to protect Biden.
“I thought Joe Biden was pretty good in the interview, but if the shoe were on the other foot, I can’t believe The New York Times wouldn’t have gone and gotten [Democratic California Sen.] Adam Schiff’s reaction,” Halperin said. “There’s no Republican reaction in that story. There’s no legal expert quoted in the story.”
The Times piece detailed how Biden relied on an autopen—a machine that replicates signatures—to approve pardons and commutations, claiming he personally authorized each one. But Halperin pointed out the glaring omission of opposing viewpoints, something the liberal media would never dare do if a Republican were in the hot seat.
“It’s like, that’s basic Journalism 101. Biden is now taking the position that he could delegate pardons, right? That’s the position they took in the story. Everything else is fine. That’s the one thing. So, what do law professors think about that? What do Republicans think about that? It’s absent from the story,” Halperin fumed. “I don’t understand that as a matter of journalism. And I guarantee you if it were a Republican, they’d have both those things. They’d have some hysterical law professor saying this is an impeachable offense. And they’d have a Republican saying this needs to be investigated … It’s madness!”
The Times—predictably—ignored requests for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation, further proving its commitment to biased reporting rather than holding power accountable.
Biden’s Double Standard: Protecting Hunter While Dodging Scrutiny
The report revealed that Biden only signed one pardon by hand during his final months in office—for his scandal-plagued son, Hunter Biden. Meanwhile, he rubber-stamped 25 other pardons and commutations using the autopen, raising serious questions about transparency and accountability.
“I made every decision,” Biden insisted to the Times, but emails reviewed by the outlet showed his staff had a carefully orchestrated process to justify the autopen use. His staff secretary, Stefanie Feldman, operated the machine, and while Biden claimed to approve each clemency, the Times admitted that in large batches, he merely signed off on “criteria and standards”—not individual cases.
Shielding Allies, Punishing Enemies
Biden also defended his controversial pardons for political allies like Gen. Mark Milley and Dr. Anthony Fauci, as well as his son. “Everybody knows how vindictive he is, so we knew that they’d do what they’re doing now,” Biden whined, painting himself as a victim of President Donald Trump’s Justice Department rather than a leader who abused his power.
“I consciously made all those decisions,” Biden claimed—yet the evidence suggests otherwise.
The Liberal Media’s Hypocrisy on Full Display
Had this been President Trump wielding the autopen to pardon family members and allies, the Times and the rest of the left-wing media would have erupted in outrage. Legal “experts” would have flooded cable news, Democrats would have demanded investigations, and impeachment chatter would dominate headlines.
But because it’s Biden, the Times gives him a soft interview, omits critical perspectives, and lets him off the hook. This is the same media that spent years hyperventilating over Trump’s every move while turning a blind eye to Biden’s ethical lapses.
WATCH
President Trump, by contrast, has always faced relentless, unfair scrutiny from the press. Yet despite the media’s obsession with attacking him, he continues to deliver for the American people—unlike Biden, who used his office to protect his family and friends while the liberal media cheered him on.
