Trump begins firing federal workers after getting the go-ahead from the Supreme Court

President Donald Trump, last week, fired over 1,000 government employees.

This comes, according to The Hill, after the Supreme Court recently gave Trump the green light to do so.

This is all part of the Trump administration’s effort to significantly downsize the federal government. Take a look at this scene from the State Department:

Background

Trump and his team have actually been trying to lay off a large number of federal employees for months now, but the efforts were challenged in the courts, and lower court judges ruled against Trump.

Recently, however, the Supreme Court got involved, and it ended up siding with the Trump administration.

Fox News reports:

[Justice Sonia] Sotomayor’s remarks were included as part of a short two-page order from the Supreme Court saying the executive order Trump signed in February directing federal agencies to plan for “large-scale reductions in force (RIFs), consistent with applicable law” was likely lawful. The Supreme Court said it had no opinion at this stage on the legality of any actual job cuts and that that question was not before the high court.

The Trump administration is viewing this as authorization from the Supreme Court to proceed with the layoffs.

The first of these layoff has already taken place.

1,300 gone

It is at the State Department that the first layoffs were carried out.

The New York Post reports:

The State Department on Friday began terminating more than 1,300 positions as part of the Trump administration’s effort to trim the size of the federal workforce. The layoffs will affect 1,107 civil servants and 246 foreign service officers with assignments in the US, according to a senior department official. Employees began receiving termination notices in the morning informing them that their positions were being “abolished.” By afternoon, several laid-off staffers were spotted tearfully departing the State Department’s headquarters. They were met by a crowd of clapping supporters outside the Harry S. Truman Building, near the White House.

The Hill reports that this is only the start.

And others among the 17 agencies have already given signals as to the extent of their planned cuts. Health and Human Services, which already announced plans to cut 10,000 employees of the 82,000 on payroll at the start of the administration. Agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency, the Social Security Agency, Veterans Affairs and more are impacted by the ruling.
