A Florida roadway near President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate is poised to be renamed in his honor. Palm Beach County commissioners unanimously approved a measure this week to rename Southern Boulevard as “President Donald J. Trump Boulevard,” according to The Associated Press.
Southern Boulevard runs east-west and serves as the primary route to Trump’s Palm Beach residence. It is also the route taken by Trump’s motorcade when traveling between Mar-a-Lago and Palm Beach International Airport.
Supporters of Trump are known to line Southern Boulevard to greet the president during his trips back from Washington, D.C.
This renaming would not be the first in Palm Beach County to honor a Republican president. Delray Beach, located about 20 miles south of Mar-a-Lago, renamed a street George Bush Boulevard in the early 1990s in tribute to former President George H.W. Bush.
Democratic presidents have also been honored with roadways named after them in Palm Beach County. For example, Riviera Beach renamed a street President Barack Obama Highway in 2015. Similarly, the city of Pahokee renamed a street Barack Obama Boulevard in 2013.
The Federal Highway Administration told Fox News Digital that it does not maintain a directory of federal roadways named after U.S. presidents, per the New York Post.
However, a 1993 list from the U.S. Census Bureau identified the most common street names in the country. George Washington tops the list as the president with the most roads named after him.
Following Washington are Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president, and Andrew Jackson, the 7th president, with numerous streets bearing their names nationwide.
The fourth most common presidential street name is Johnson, honoring either Andrew Johnson (17th president) or Lyndon B. Johnson (36th president).
Other presidents whose names frequently appear on street signs include Thomas Jefferson (3rd president), Woodrow Wilson (28th president), Adams (John Adams, 2nd president, or John Quincy Adams, 6th president), Zachary Taylor (12th president), and James Madison (4th president).
More recent presidents also have roads named after them across the United States. John F. Kennedy (35th president), Ronald Reagan (40th president), and Barack Obama (44th president) are all represented.
Reagan has parkways in Georgia and Indiana, a highway in Ohio, and a freeway in California named in his honor. Additional tributes include the Ronald Reagan Trail in Illinois, Ronald Reagan Boulevard in Texas, and the Ronald Reagan Turnpike in Florida.
Obama has multiple avenues and boulevards named after him in states such as Florida, Illinois, Mississippi, Ohio, California, Georgia, and Missouri.
Kennedy is commemorated with an expressway in Chicago, a boulevard in Philadelphia, and a street in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
In Minneapolis, a downtown sequence of streets honors presidents in chronological order from west to east.
Outside Florida, nearly 24 miles of a U.S. highway in Oklahoma were renamed for Trump in 2021. States like Arizona and Kentucky have also proposed similar legislation to honor the current president.
Trump also has an avenue named after him in Hialeah, Florida, a suburb of Miami.
Florida law requires that if a road or bridge designated for renaming crosses multiple cities or counties, each affected local government must pass a supporting resolution before signage can be installed.
Since Southern Boulevard passes through both West Palm Beach and Palm Beach, those municipalities must still approve the renaming before it is finalized.
