Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has weighed in on the 2028 presidential race, suggesting that former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel may be considering a campaign.
Pelosi’s comments were made during an interview for a recent article by The Detroit Free Press.
The article initially focused on Emanuel himself, who previously served as chief of staff under President Barack Obama. When asked directly about a possible presidential bid, Emanuel stopped short of ruling it out.
His comments hinted at political ambitions while emphasizing the importance of addressing core American concerns.
Emanuel argued that the Democratic Party needs to avoid distractions from cultural issues and instead focus on the core needs of American citizens.
He said Americans are concerned with economic opportunities and the pursuit of the American dream.
The former mayor emphasized the need for political strength and pragmatism, stating that the party should avoid appearing “weak and woke.”
He has reportedly begun using that phrase often in recent public remarks, per the Conservative Brief.
When asked again about a 2028 run, Emanuel remained non-committal but open.
He said he would need to be certain that he has answers to what he believes ails the country, the political system, and the Democratic Party before making any decisions.
“I know what I want to do,” he told The Detroit Free Press. “We’ve got to get ready to fight for America—and that’s what I’m going to do.”
His response suggested a level of commitment that often precedes official announcements.
Pelosi, who has known Emanuel since his days in the Clinton White House, expressed confidence in his intentions. Without hesitation, she said, “I think so,” when asked whether she believes Emanuel will run.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has offered his own view of the Democratic Party’s potential future contenders, mocking them in a recent Truth Social post.
Trump ridiculed Democrats for their loss in the 2024 election and suggested that they double down on far-left figures.
He sarcastically proposed that Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) run for president, with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) as vice president and other progressive lawmakers as cabinet members.
Trump included Zohran Mamdani, a New York assemblyman and self-described socialist, in his list.
In the same post, Trump criticized the Democrats’ political direction, referring to them as being led by “Low IQ” individuals and warning that the country would be “really SCREWED” under such leadership.
Trump’s commentary followed recent criticisms from Crockett and Ocasio-Cortez targeting him on issues including immigration, the economy, and military actions. Ocasio-Cortez even called for Trump’s impeachment over a strike against Iran.
In a separate Truth Social post, Trump targeted Mamdani directly, blasting him as a “100% Communist Lunatic.”
Mamdani recently won the Democratic primary for New York City mayor, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Trump expressed alarm over Mamdani’s growing political influence, describing his mannerisms and appearance in harsh terms.
He criticized prominent Democrats, including Senator Chuck Schumer, for allegedly supporting Mamdani.
That same week, Crockett exited the race to become the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee. She had been vying for the role of ranking member on the panel investigating President Joe Biden’s mental fitness.
