The Big Beautiful Bill has passed, and many on the right are celebrating the parts that attract them the most. Among those celebrating, although somewhat subdued, are the pro-lifers.
For the first time in American history, a federal administration actually defunded Planned Parenthood. It is not without cause that the abortion provider immediately secured a fourteen-day injunction of the defunding order.

This defunding of the nation’s largest abortion provider will deprived it of fungible funds that will help keep Planned Parenthood operating, freeing up monies that can be used for promoting abortion.
Thus, everyone knows that the loss of hundreds of millions in operating funds translates into the indirect saving of countless unborn lives and perhaps the closure of as many as 200 abortion mills nationwide. This is certainly something to celebrate, and fight hard to defeat the injunction.
Failure to Deliver the Knockout Blow
The effort to defund Planned Parenthood is a long awaited dream for pro-lifers. They cheered when the house put through a robust measure. However, the joy of the moment was dimmed by the final bill that emerged from the Senate. The original House bill had called for defunding the organization for ten years, but the compromise bill reduced that decade to a single year.
Planned Parenthood is not a single, monolithic organization, but rather a network of independently run nonprofit affiliates. The new defunding effort only stops federal funds from going to those affiliates that offer abortions and received more than $800,000 in 2023. Thus, in theory, some smaller affiliates can continue to receive funds. Other facilities can stop doing abortions for a year to keep the cash coming. Still other affiliates hope to weather the one-year storm until funds become available again.

In other words, the defunding that should have delivered a knockout blow will not be a game-changer. The abortion giant will survive, although greatly wounded. It took a hit just when a total pro-life victory over this mortal enemy of millions of unborn Americans was in reach.
The tragic part of this development is that all the elements of victory were in place. The Republicans had nothing to lose. They hold majorities in both chambers. They managed to include defunding in the bill, which was a victory in itself. The measure would satisfy fiscal conservatives by deleting hundreds of millions of dollars from the federal budget, which greatly needs reduction. The defunding decade would have filled the social conservatives with joy and secured their future votes. The ten-year knockout blow was a win-win proposition.
Lack of Courage, Fear and So-Called Moderation
The only thing lacking was the courage to go all the way. That means defunding Planned Parenthood not for ten years but forever. If it is wrong for one year, then it is wrong for all years. There is no reason for keeping this disgraceful federal tribute payment to the sexual revolution in the budget. It was a cowardly retreat from principle.
However, it was not only courage that was lacking. Planned Parenthood was also saved by fear. Some elected officials feared the consequences of opposing this powerful force, which enjoys so much establishment backing. They feared that going all the way might endanger their political careers.

Lastly, Planned Parenthood was saved by the so-called moderates. These disciples of Pontius Pilate support limited abortion and view the elimination of Planned Parenthood as extreme. Strangely, they do not consider the death of millions of innocent unborn Americans as extreme. They prefer not to reflect on their unjust death. They just ignore the moral abomination and, in their “moderation,” allow the slaughter of the innocent to continue. They deem the national sin of procured abortion preferable to the justified bankruptcy of what has become the symbol of that sin—Planned Parenthood.
A Symbol that Guarantees a Permissive Liberal Culture
Indeed, Planned Parenthood is a symbolic pillar and the major support for the sexual revolution in the culture. Its shameful symbolism helps keep modern liberal society standing. This symbolic value is the most important reason why Congress did not permanently defund Planned Parenthood.
The essence of liberalism proclaims the right to think, feel and do everything the unbridled passions demand. Abortion is something that guarantees this false right by separating sexual acts from their consequences. Without procured abortion, the sexual revolution that dominates postmodern culture cannot continue.
Thus, rather than returning to a moral law that would bring order to their lives, many people today prefer to live in a fiction that allows them to satisfy their passions, even when it destroys the lives of the unborn, devastates their own lives and families and ruins their communities.

Indeed, the decadent liberal establishment must keep Planned Parenthood alive to keep itself and its denial of morality alive. As long as it exists, Planned Parenthood sends the message that God’s moral law can be ignored without consequences.
It is high time to send the opposite message.
