Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and his wife, State Sen. Angela Paxton, publicly announced Thursday their decision to end their nearly 40-year marriage.
The announcements came via separate statements posted on X within minutes of each other, revealing personal struggles amid Ken Paxton’s ongoing campaign to unseat incumbent Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) in the upcoming Republican primary.
Angela Paxton announced that she filed for divorce on “biblical grounds” after 38 years of marriage.
In her statement, she described marriage as a “sacred covenant” and said she had pursued reconciliation.
However, she added, “In light of recent discoveries, I do not believe it honors God or is loving to myself, my children, or Ken to remain in the marriage.”
Approximately 20 minutes later, Ken Paxton confirmed the split, attributing it in part to the pressures of “countless political attacks and public scrutiny.”
He expressed pride in their family and requested prayers and privacy, stating, “I remain committed to supporting our amazing children and grandchildren.”
The timing of the divorce announcement occurs as Paxton intensifies his primary challenge against Cornyn, who has held his seat for more than two decades.
Despite Paxton’s legal and political controversies, recent polling from Politico shows him leading Cornyn in the race.
Paxton’s legal troubles include impeachment proceedings initiated two years ago by the GOP-controlled Texas House.
The impeachment accused him of corruption, bribery and abuse of office, especially regarding efforts to benefit real estate investor Nate Paul.
Paul’s businesses were reportedly under FBI investigation and facing financial difficulties at the time.
According to The Texas Tribune, Paxton was accused of repeatedly misusing his position to aid Paul’s struggling enterprises amid ongoing legal issues.
During the impeachment trial in the state Senate, reports surfaced alleging that Paxton engaged in an extramarital affair with a former Senate aide.
The affair gained significance because Paul, a campaign donor and ally, reportedly employed the aide at Paxton’s request.
Allegations suggest a quid pro quo arrangement, where Paxton used his office to benefit Paul in exchange for help covering up the affair.
The Tribune reported Paul facilitated Paxton’s clandestine meetings with the aide by sharing a private Uber account.
Critics have linked Paxton’s personal and political challenges, suggesting his ongoing infidelities contributed to the divorce.
The public nature of the split raises questions about its potential impact on Paxton’s political ambitions as he campaigns against Cornyn.
Cornyn addressed the divorce briefly during a Capitol Hill press event, calling it a “private matter” and expressing sympathy for Angela Paxton.
When asked about Ken Paxton’s character, Cornyn declined to comment, saying, “There’s plenty of other reasons that I could comment on in terms of character, but I’ll probably just leave that alone.”
Angela Paxton has faced criticism for choosing to announce the divorce publicly on X and for ending the marriage rather than pursuing further reconciliation, according to BizPac Review.
This announcement adds to the series of personal and political challenges confronting Ken Paxton as he continues his campaign amid ongoing legal scrutiny and political pressure.
