SUNSET PARK, BROOKLYN – In a tragic incident early this morning, two pedestrians were fatally struck by a speeding vehicle in the bustling neighborhood of Sunset Park. Authorities are actively searching for the driver who fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of destruction and heartbreak.
The collision occurred just before 4:30 a.m. at the intersection of Third Avenue and 52nd Street. Surveillance footage from a nearby business captured the vehicle, a dark gray BMW, racing southbound on Third Avenue at an alarming speed. The car, which sustained significant front-end damage, hit two men as they crossed the street.
The victims, identified as a 59-year-old and an 80-year-old, both lived nearby and were pronounced dead at the scene. The road, known for heavy pedestrian traffic due to its proximity to local markets and workplaces, has since reopened.
Witnesses described the area as hazardous, especially at night, and expressed shock that the driver did not stop to render aid. “It’s a dangerous road to cross in the dark,” a local resident said. “It’s horrifying that someone could just drive off like that.”
The NYPD is urging the driver to come forward and take responsibility for the incident. So far, no arrests have been made.
Residents are calling for increased safety measures in the area, highlighting the frequent speeding and the need for better lighting and traffic enforcement.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of two of its members, grappling with the fear that such a tragedy could happen again.
The police have asked anyone with information to contact them as they work tirelessly to bring justice to the victims and their families.
