Democrats are at it again with their tired old fear-mongering tactics.
They can’t win on the merits of their arguments, so they resort to the same old lies.
And Byron Donalds annihilated Democrats after they pulled out their tired old playbook.
Democrats dust off their greatest hits
Democrats have been using the same playbook for decades whenever Republicans try to reform bloated government programs.
They scream that “people will die” if any common-sense reforms are implemented.
It doesn’t matter if the reforms are reasonable or if they have broad public support.
The moment Republicans suggest that able-bodied Americans should work or volunteer to receive government benefits, Democrats immediately claim it’s a death sentence for the poor.
Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) wasn’t having any of it during a recent appearance on Fox News’s Big Weekend Show.
The hosts pointed out that Democrats had previously supported work requirements as part of Medicaid, which aligns with the views of a vast majority of Americans.
But now they’re opposing the exact same reforms that are included in Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill.”
“The reason Democrats are opposed is because we are beginning the process of unwinding the massive expansion that started under Barack Obama and continued not with that Joe Biden that you just put up, but the last Joe Biden that everybody remembers,” Donalds explained.¹
The truth about Trump’s Medicaid reforms
The Florida Congressman broke down exactly what the “Big Beautiful Bill” actually requires for Medicaid recipients.
“They massively expanded not just Medicaid, but the welfare state overall. So all we are saying is, if you are able-bodied, between the ages of 18 and 55, you have to work 20 hours a week. And it is not even work; it is going to find a job, volunteering, or going to school. That is what we said,” Donalds stated.¹
That’s hardly the draconian policy Democrats are making it out to be.
Under the reforms, able-bodied adults between 18 and 55 would need to work just 20 hours per week to maintain their Medicaid benefits.
But even that requirement is flexible.
Recipients can meet the requirement by working, volunteering, or going to school.
It’s a reasonable expectation that most Americans support.
But Democrats are acting like it’s some sort of cruel punishment.
Donalds exposes the real reason Democrats are panicking
The Florida Representative didn’t stop there.
He exposed the real reason Democrats are so opposed to the Medicaid reforms.
“The other piece in this bill, in Medicaid and also in SNAP [Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program], is that we are going to stop these states, especially New York and California, from gaming the Medicaid system so that they can fund their budgets with federal money in order to give welfare and Medicaid to illegals,” Donalds revealed.¹
That’s the real issue Democrats have with the reforms.
They’re not actually concerned about poor Americans losing their benefits.
They’re worried about losing their ability to use federal taxpayer money to fund benefits for illegal aliens.
States like New York and California have been gaming the system for years.
They use federal Medicaid money to subsidize their own budgets while providing benefits to people who aren’t even legally in the country.
Democrats resort to lies when they can’t win on facts
Donalds didn’t mince words about Democrats’ dishonest tactics.
“So they are lying because they did not get their way,” he concluded. “They do not want to tell the truth because if they told the American people the truth, by polling, we know the American people vehemently disagree with the Democrats, but why are we surprised?”¹
He’s absolutely right.
Polling consistently shows that Americans support work requirements for able-bodied welfare recipients.
They also oppose using taxpayer money to provide benefits to illegal aliens.
Democrats know they can’t win this argument on the merits.
So they resort to fear-mongering and lies.
Trump’s leadership gets the job done
Donalds also praised President Trump’s hands-on approach to getting the “Big Beautiful Bill” passed.
Speaking on The Story with Martha MacCallum, he credited Trump’s business-style leadership for rallying Republicans behind the legislation.
“I was a part of a lot of these conversations and, yeah, the president came in very focused on the details of the legislation — where all the pieces were moving,” Donalds said. “And I know I talked to a couple of my colleagues. Quite frankly, they were very impressed that the president came in and was trying to work with members to get them comfortable.”²
Trump’s approach worked.
The House sent the “Big Beautiful Bill” to his desk with just two Republicans joining Democrats in opposition.
Even conservative members of the House Freedom Caucus, who initially criticized the bill, ultimately gave it their support.
“At the end of the day, Donald Trump is a businessman, ladies and gentlemen. If he has to use the stick, he’ll use it. If he has to use carrots, he’ll do that too,” Donalds explained. “He’s about accomplishing the mission — period, point blank.”²
Republicans want to empower individuals
Representative Mike Haridopolos (R-FL) also blasted Democrats for their opposition to the reforms.
He compared them to the Bolsheviks of the early Soviet Union.
“Republicans want to empower individuals to spend the money as they see fit, whereas Democrats are still playing the old tax and spend game,” Haridopolos said. “America has had enough.”¹
That’s the fundamental difference between the two parties.
Republicans want to give people the tools and incentives to become self-sufficient.
Democrats want to keep people dependent on government handouts.
They’ve built their entire political strategy around creating a permanent class of welfare recipients who will vote for them in exchange for government benefits.
The American people see through the lies
Democrats can scream about “people dying” all they want.
But the American people aren’t buying it anymore.
They’ve seen this playbook too many times before.
Every time Republicans try to reform welfare programs, Democrats claim it will cause mass casualties.
But the reforms never actually hurt anyone.
In fact, they usually help people by encouraging them to develop job skills and become self-reliant.
Work requirements for able-bodied adults isn’t radical.
It’s common sense.
Most Americans already work to support themselves and their families.
They don’t think it’s too much to ask that others do the same.
