Pro-life organizations in Canada are applauding the American federal government’s decision to defund Planned Parenthood for the next year, and they hope to emulate this success up north.
The “Big Beautiful Bill,” which drops all federal funding for Planned Parenthood for one year, was signed into law July 4, the day after it narrowly passed in the House.
“While the [Big Beautiful] bill only defunds ‘Big Abortion’ for one year, this still marks a momentous and historic victory for pro-life advocates,” Jeff Gunnarson, national president of the Campaign Life Coalition, an influential pro-life organization that lobbies at the national and provincial levels, said, according to The Catholic Register. “What we are witnessing in America is the continued dismantling of the culture of death, not only in the courts, as seen with the Dobbs decision, but now through legislation passed by elected leaders.”
Planned Parenthood has received federal funds since 1970, according to the American Center for Law and Justice, making this the first time in half a century that the nation’s largest abortion provider will not receive financial assistance from the federal government.
Some American religious and pro-life groups, including the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), have criticized the “Big Beautiful Bill,” particularly for its cuts to Medicaid and food assistance, as CatholicVote previously reported. However, they have welcomed the move to defund Planned Parenthood.
Canadians hoping to emulate their neighbor’s successes in the pro-life cause face an uphill battle. Unlike the pro-life movement in the US, Canada’s is relatively small. Of the 343 members of Parliament, 42 identify as pro-life, according to the Campaign Life Coalition. However, this number represents an improvement; six of the pro-life MPs were elected for the first time this year.
Prolife Alberta, a group that advocates for pro-life policy in the province of Alberta, told The Catholic Register that “while the United States moves forward, our leaders remain silent. It’s time that changed.”
