In hockey, the occasional brawl protects the game’s stars and keeps dirty players honest. The ‘enforcer’ is a team’s go-to guy to settle such scores. But not usually on the golf course.
To properly set up this story we will need to know who is involved, and what the incident is about.
A couple of groups were out on a typical summer day, working on what some have called ‘a good walk spoiled’ on the golf course.
One group was not respecting the time of the group behind them, not only by playing slow and not offering to let the other group ‘play through’, but by making no effort to keep the game moving. (In the confrontation, you will hear mention of how long the other group has been waiting as the other group hasn’t even teed off yet.)
Alcohol may have been involved as the second group said to the first group, ‘You guys can’t even stand to tee your ball up’.
It’s at a Canadian golf course, and one guy in the second group just happens to be Nick Tarnasky.
Tarnasky, 40, from Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, was listed at 6-feet, 2-inches, 230-pounds as a player. He had dozens of fights in 13 years of pro hockey, including 245 NHL games with Tampa and Florida, where he got 297 penalty minutes.
[…] Said Jordie Demcher of Barstool Sports of Tarnasky and the golf fight: “He wasn’t a hockey player who fought occasionally. He was a fighter who sometimes managed to play ice hockey. He was bashing dudes skulls open while he was skating on a sheet of ice. Do you really think he was even going to break a sweat having to beat the sh*t out of some nerd while standing on foot? So let this be a lesson to all the guys out there who have a short fuse, and have had too much to drink–if you’re going to challenge a guy to a fight, maybe do your homework first. At least figure out his name and do a quick Google search. You might think you’re just fighting some random massive mutant who was going to kick your ass anyway. But next thing you know, you’re dealing with a guy who was legitimately a professional ass kicker. Check the game notes, bud.” —Edmonton Journal
Here’s a photo of him showing up for work.
He’s a bit older now, sure. But (as you will see) he still knows how to handle himself.
Nobody MADE the loud guy pick a fight with an honest-to-goodness NHL enforcer. There WERE other ways this could have ended, but Mr Mouthy just had to make it a ‘tough guy’ question.
A very public mistake he will be regretting for a LONG time to come.
Credit to Tarnasky, he could have caved this guy’s whole face in, with very little effort, especially since the dumbass kept coming back for more. Instead, he used just enough force to back him off and shut him down, so that his friends could step in to talk a little sense into his thick head.
Video:
Another retired hockey player, Marc Methot, saw the video and even called him a ‘gentleman’ for his choice of how and where he chose to drop his hapless attacker, when there were some far less forgiving options at hand.
We could add to that the fact that Tarnasky kept trying to tell this guy to stand down. The number of times he said ‘enough’ would have tried most of our patience. But he only fought as long as he had to, with a little help from the pond to help him make his point.
