Protesters clashed with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents outside a San Francisco immigration court as an illegal immigrant was being detained.
ICE agents have been showing up at immigration hearings and detaining illegal immigrants, which they did on Tuesday when protesters were blocking the doors to the courthouse, NBC Bay Area reported. The ICE agents pushed the male illegal immigrant through the protesters and into a van. Some protesters got onto the hood of the van as it was attempting to drive away.
Protesters followed ICE agents from the courthouse to another building until a car pulled up, and a federal officer stepped out, brandishing a gun and yelling at the protesters to “back up.”
On Tuesday, a U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told NBC Bay Area in a statement, “On July 8 protestors violently attacked and obstructed federal ICE officers who were simply doing their job by enforcing our nation’s laws. Of course these protestors have zero respect for the rule of law, as they so casually violate it.
“This type of vile behavior has led to a 700% increase in assaults against ICE officers, and just last week, a coordinated attack at an ICE facility led to an officer being shot. There is no tolerance for violence, and those responsible will be held accountable.”
