Fox News Digital dropped a bombshell on Tuesday that has Washington buzzing with the news of criminal investigations targeting former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey, as Fox News reports.
These probes, confirmed by Justice Department sources, center on potential misconduct tied to the Trump-Russia investigation, with allegations ranging from false statements to Congress to whispers of a broader conspiracy.
Let’s rewind to 2016, when the Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA) claimed Russia meddled in the presidential election to boost Donald Trump — a narrative that’s been under scrutiny ever since.
Uncovering the roots of controversy
A recently declassified “lessons learned” review of the 2017 ICA, pushed by then-Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe, exposed procedural hiccups and deviations from intelligence norms that raise eyebrows.
The review pointed fingers at the inclusion of the now-infamous Steele Dossier — a discredited document funded by Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the DNC through Fusion GPS—in the ICA process, despite internal pushback from CIA officials who called it a mere “internet rumor.”
Brennan, in particular, faces heat for allegedly advocating for the dossier’s inclusion, even as declassified emails from 2016 show his deputy warning it could tank the report’s credibility.
Brennan’s testimony under microscope
Fast forward to May 2023, and Brennan told a House committee he opposed referencing the Steele Dossier in the ICA, claiming, “The CIA was very much opposed.”
Yet, the new CIA review paints a different picture, stating Brennan “showed a preference for narrative consistency over analytical soundness” — a polite way of saying he may have prioritized politics over facts.
Turns out, actions might just have consequences, and Ratcliffe, unsurprised by the findings, referred evidence of Brennan’s conduct to FBI Director Kash Patel for potential prosecution.
Comey and conspiracy questions
Meanwhile, Comey isn’t escaping the spotlight, with a separate criminal probe underway, though the specifics remain under wraps as per DOJ sources.
Two sources hinted at FBI suspicions of a “conspiracy” between Brennan and Comey, a term that opens the door to a laundry list of prosecutorial avenues — talk about a plot twist.
Neither the FBI nor the CIA offered comment, and both Brennan and Comey stayed silent when approached by Fox News Digital, leaving us to ponder what’s brewing behind closed doors.
Clinton’s shadow and Crossfire Hurricane
Adding fuel to the fire, declassified notes from a 2016 briefing by Brennan to then-President Barack Obama — attended by Comey, Joe Biden, and others — reveal intelligence about a Clinton campaign plan to link Trump to Russian interference.
This tidbit, passed to the FBI under the “Crossfire Hurricane” investigation, was later criticized in Special Counsel John Durham’s report for the FBI’s “startling and inexplicable failure” to critically assess this Clinton-linked intel.
As White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt put it to Fox News Digital, “President Trump was right — again,” urging accountability for what she called a political scandal against Trump.
