Ever imagine a New York City mayoral candidate threatening to arrest a world leader like Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — talk about a campaign stunt for the history books!
Here’s the gist: Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic Party nominee for NYC mayor, has declared that he would detain Netanyahu if he visits the city, while Israeli leader laughed off the notion during a White House meeting with President Donald Trump, as Fox News reports.
First up, Mamdani, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist and leading contender for NYC mayor, sparked debate in December by pledging to apprehend Netanyahu.
Bold arrest pledge unveiled
Mamdani cites a warrant from the International Criminal Court against Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant as his reasoning. “As mayor, New York City would arrest Benjamin Netanyahu,” Mamdani proclaimed.
He further stated, “This is a city whose values are in line with international law.” While the sentiment might appeal to some, isn’t playing global cop a stretch for a municipal office?
On Monday evening, Netanyahu met with President Trump at the White House to address critical issues like Iran and Israel’s conflict with Hamas.
Netanyahu brushes off threat
When Mamdani’s bold claim came up, Netanyahu didn’t hesitate to dismiss it. “Mamdani’s threat is silly in many ways, because it’s just not serious,” he said.
He added, “I’m not concerned about that.” Netanyahu even threw in a casual challenge: “I’m going to come there with President Trump and we’ll see.”
President Trump, never one to hold back, offered his take on Mamdani’s politics. “He’s not a socialist. He’s a communist,” Trump claimed, also pointing to alleged negative comments about Jewish communities.
Trump warns of federal oversight power
Trump suggested federal funding could keep things in check, saying, “He needs the money through the White House.” He warned, “He’s going to behave. He better behave.”
Meanwhile, Netanyahu turned to graver matters, reflecting on the aftermath of October 7th. “After October 7th, people said the Palestinians had a state, Hamas state in Gaza, and look what they did with it,” he noted.
He continued, “They massacred our people, raped our women, beheaded our men, invaded our cities and our towns and did horrendous massacres.” This grim account highlights why Israel remains wary of certain peace proposals.
Never again
Netanyahu argued, “So people aren’t likely to say, let’s just give them another state.” He insisted any future arrangement must secure Israel’s safety above all else.
He brushed off critics, stating, “We don’t care.” Netanyahu emphasized that protecting Israeli lives outweighs idealized visions of statehood for others.
Finally, he echoed a historic commitment: “You know, we vowed, ‘never again.’” He affirmed, “Never again is now, it’s not going to happen again,” reminding us that while Mamdani’s threat makes noise, the true stakes dwarf city-level politics.
