Not long ago, reports surfaced that Olympic gold medal gymnast Mary Lou Retton had been arrested on suspicion of DUI.
It was crushing to see one of our childhood heroes brought down to this level, especially after her recently reported health issues.
While I was hoping the DUI was a result of some meds she has been prescribed, that was not the case, and the pictures, videos, and details of her arrest are embarrassing for the former Olympian, to say the least.
Do you know who I am?
Those are the words we all hate to hear a star or politician use when they are arrested, but that is what Retton resorted to when she was arrested.
The mugshot was pathetic, with a somber Retton realizing that her image was about to be destroyed.
She was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or drugs on May 17.
Reports at the time stated that officers also found an open bottle of wine in the car, so my hope that this was just a side effect of her medication went out the window.
While Retton pushed back during the arrest, saying and sounding exactly how you would expect someone who was DUI to sound, she has since apologized for her actions and admitted her guilt.
She has released a statement after the fact, stating, “I take full responsibility for my actions. What happened was completely unacceptable. I make no excuses. To my family, friends and my fans: I have let you down, and for that I am deeply sorry.”
Retton added, “I am determined to learn and grow from this experience, and I am committed to making positive changes in my life. I truly appreciate your concern, encouragement and continued support.”
Her attorney added, “In keeping with her values, Mary Lou made no request for special treatment and was subject to the same legal process as any other individual. She is grateful for the professionalism of law enforcement and the court system, and she fully respects the outcome.”
The lawyer continued, “Mary Lou has expressed a sincere desire to use this experience as a moment for reflection and accountability. She asks for privacy as she moves forward with her personal and professional life.”
I really do hope she learns from this experience and gets her life back on track.
For those of us who grew up during her gymnastics heyday, Retton was an inspiration, so it is rather difficult seeing her in this light.
I am rooting for you, Mary Lou!
