Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with US envoy Keith Kellogg in Rome July 9 and demanded that the US provide the country with stronger defense and a renewed push for a “just peace” following Russia’s largest aerial assault of the war.
The July 8 overnight barrage launched 728 drones and 13 missiles across Ukrainian cities — the “highest number of aerial targets in a single day” since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, according to Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy and Kellogg discussed expanding joint weapons production with the US and increasing arms purchases to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses, according to Zelenskyy’s official website.
“We thank President Trump, both parties, and all American people for their support and assistance,” Zelenskyy wrote on X after the meeting. “We sincerely value the friendship between our nations.”
Trump has consistently called for peace between Russia and Ukraine, urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the nearly four-year war.
During a July 7 cabinet meeting, Trump condemned Putin‘s failure to cease warfare.
“It’s a horrible, horrible thing,” he told reporters. “And I’m not happy with President Putin at all.”
Asked about additional US support, Trump said, “We’re going to send some more weapons. We have to. They have to be able to defend themselves. They’re getting hit very hard now.”
Trump said he is “very strongly” considering a sanctions bill that would impose up to 500% tariffs on US imports of Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other resources, including those routed through countries that continue buying from Moscow.
On the same day, Zelenskyy met privately with Pope Leo XIV, CatholicVote reported. He thanked the Pontiff “for his support of Ukrainian children” and called the visit “of immense importance.”
