NEW MILFORD, NJ – A family in New Milford is counting their blessings after a garbage truck careened down their street, damaging their vehicles but sparing them from injury. The incident, described by the family as a “freak accident,” occurred early Tuesday morning on Eagle Avenue.
The morning had begun like any other, with residents preparing for the day. However, chaos ensued when a garbage truck, left unattended, started rolling down the street. Surveillance footage from a nearby deli captured the truck’s crew stepping away to collect trash. Moments later, the truck barreled forward without a driver, striking cars parked in a driveway.
Meg Ryan, whose car was clipped before the truck jumped the curb, described the terrifying scene. The truck collided with her mother and sister’s vehicles, pushing them dangerously close to the home’s gas meter. “The sight of that massive truck in front of our window was chilling,” Ryan recounted.
Marie Rose, the mother, recalled the panic as police urged them to evacuate. “Seeing such a huge vehicle outside your home and hearing the police telling you to evacuate is something you never expect,” she said, still visibly shaken.
Despite the damage, the family considers themselves fortunate. “It could have been much worse,” Rose admitted. The community’s quick response, including a deli worker who rushed over to check on them, provided some comfort.
The family now faces the challenge of managing daily life with two of their cars out of commission. They have set up a GoFundMe page to help cover expenses while waiting for the insurance process to unfold. “Losing one car is tough, but two is a significant disruption,” Ryan explained, noting the impact on their work schedules.
Police have filed a report, and the insurance investigation is underway. In the meantime, the family is relying on rides from friends and their own resilience to navigate this unexpected hurdle.
As they reflect on the ordeal, the family expresses gratitude that the truck did not hit the gas main, which would have led to a far more dangerous situation. For now, they are focused on rebuilding and finding a sense of normalcy.
