A Virginia man is headed to prison after brutally beating his 12-year-old autistic stepson—all because the boy was eating bread in bed.
Casey Mobley, 35, pleaded guilty to child abuse earlier this year. Although the state’s sentencing guidelines suggested just six months behind bars, a Smyth County judge handed Mobley two years in prison followed by three years of probation, according to Commonwealth’s Attorney Phillip “Bucky” Blevins.
The attack happened around 1 a.m. on July 14, 2023. Mobley became enraged after seeing the boy had eaten bread in bed. Security camera footage showed Mobley cursing and striking the child repeatedly in the face and on the buttocks during a 30-second outburst.
At the sentencing hearing, Blevins slammed the recommended punishment as far too lenient. “Casey Mobley is a monster who beat a child without mercy,” he said in a statement. “The young man was vulnerable, innocent, and deserving of love and protection – not violence. What Mobley did is inexcusable and unconscionable.”
The judge agreed and chose to go beyond the state’s suggested penalty.
Blevins added that his office will continue to fight for the victims of child abuse and praised both the court and the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office for their work on the case.
Smyth County is in southwestern Virginia, near the Tennessee and North Carolina borders.
