OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who came out as gay at the age of 16, delivered a stunning rebuke to the Democratic Party in a Fourth of July social media post that garnered 2.8 million views.
The ChatGPT co-founder declared himself “politically homeless” after accusing Democrats of losing their way over the past two decades.
Altman, worth $1.7 billion, used the patriotic holiday to announce his complete break from the party he once supported.
“The Democratic party seemed reasonably aligned with it when I was 20, losing the plot when I was 30, and completely to have moved somewhere else at this point,” Altman wrote on X.
“So now I am politically homeless. But that’s fine; I care much, much more about being American than any political party.”
The 40-year-old tech mogul began his lengthy post by expressing pride in American citizenship before launching into criticism of Democratic policies.
His comments represent a significant departure from Silicon Valley’s traditionally liberal political alignment.
Altman specifically challenged the party’s approach to wealth and capitalism, advocating instead for what he termed “techno-capitalism.”
He argued that encouraging wealth creation should be prioritized over efforts to eliminate billionaires entirely.
“We should encourage people to make a ton of money,” the billionaire wrote.
“I’d rather hear from candidates about how they are going to make everyone have the stuff billionaires have instead of how they are going to eliminate billionaires.”
His remarks appeared to directly address recent comments by New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, who stated on NBC’s Meet the Press that billionaires should not exist due to economic inequality concerns.
The OpenAI executive outlined his belief system around capitalism and wealth distribution, arguing that both elements must work together for long-term success.
He emphasized that raising economic floors requires simultaneously raising ceilings.
“We should encourage people to make tons of money and then also find ways to widely distribute wealth and share the compounding magic of capitalism,” Altman explained.
“One doesn’t work without the other; you cannot raise the floor and not also raise the ceiling for very long.”
Altman criticized government intervention in economic matters, stating his belief that markets typically outperform government solutions.
He also emphasized education as crucial for maintaining America’s competitive advantage globally.
“I believed this when I was 20, when I was 30, and now I am 40 and still believe it,” the tech leader continued, reinforcing his consistency on these principles throughout his adult life.
The timing of Altman’s political declaration coincides with ongoing tensions between major tech figures and the current political landscape.
His announcement came during the same weekend that rival Elon Musk launched his own political party.
Musk announced the formation of the America Party on Saturday after conducting an online poll that showed 65.4 percent support for establishing a new political entity.
The Tesla CEO declared that existing parties had created “a one-party system” regarding government spending.
The relationship between Altman and Musk has deteriorated significantly since their initial collaboration on OpenAI’s founding in 2015.
The two previously worked together before Musk departed the company in 2018 following disagreements over direction and funding.
Their current feud intensified after OpenAI rejected a Tesla buyout offer, leading to public exchanges and legal disputes.
Altman has questioned Musk’s motivations while Musk has criticized OpenAI’s commercial transformation from its original nonprofit mission, according to Daily Mail reporting.
Altman’s political positioning gained additional significance following his involvement in President Trump’s Stargate project, announced in January.
The initiative represents a joint venture between OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle with up to $500 billion in planned investment.
The tech executive faced scrutiny from Democratic senators Elizabeth Warren and Michael Bennet after donating $1 million to Trump’s inaugural fund.
Altman pushed back against suggestions of improper influence, noting he had never received similar inquiries for Democratic contributions.
“Funny, they never sent me one of these for contributing to Democrats,” Altman responded to the senators’ letter questioning his motivations for the donation.
