The National Education Association (NEA) this week voted to break ties with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) as an educational partner over its pro-Israel stance amid the war in Gaza.
The NEA voted on Sunday at their annual meeting in Portland to adopt the proposal after it accused the league of using the term antisemitism to punish all criticism of Israel, the New York Post reported.
In a statement about the overall gathering, union president Becky Pringle (pictured above) said, “We must use our power to take action that leads, action that liberates, action that lasts,” said NEA President Becky Pringle in her address to delegates. “We are going to Educate. Communicate. Organize. Mobilize. Litigate. Legislate. Elect.”
The relationship between the two groups has been fading in the aftermath of Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel in 2023.
“NEA will not use, endorse, or publicize materials from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), such as its curricular materials or statistics,” the measure reads. “Educators embrace the urgency to respond to the questions of racism, injustice, and all forms of bigotry. Despite its reputation as a civil rights organization, the ADL is not the social justice educational partner it claims to be.”
A spokesperson for the ADL blasted the vote as being “antisemitic” and maintained that it would continue working with schools to help combat antisemitism as racial attacks against Jewish Americans reach a record high.
“It is profoundly disturbing that a group of NEA activists would brazenly attempt to further isolate their Jewish colleagues and push a radical, antisemitic agenda on students,” the spokesperson said. “We will not be cowed for supporting Israel, and we will not be deterred from our work reaching millions of students with educational programs every year … We will continue to call out this antisemitism and prioritize our Jewish students and educators.”
The NEA’s measure, which has been categorized as a boycott, will still need to go through additional steps before it is implemented.
