President Donald Trump‘s presence at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., during the opening night of Les Misérables was marked by chants and boos from the audience, as the drama off-stage rivaled the spectacle on stage. Knewz.com has learned that this is the first time the President has visited the iconic cultural institution since he made a complete overhaul of the Kennedy Center in January.
A Mixed Reception

A video clip shared on social media by The New York Times White House correspondent Shawn McCreesh inside the Washington, D.C., theater showed Trump, dressed in a Tuxedo, and his wife, Melania Trump, taking their seats as the audience gave them a reception that was a mix of cheers, boos and chants. According to reports, someone loudly cursed Trump’s name towards the end of intermission, drawing applause from the crowd. In defiance of Trump’s complaints that the Kennedy Center had hosted too many drag shows in the past, several drag queens were noticed in the crowd. Vice President J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, were loudly booed while attending a concert by the National Symphony Orchestra at the historic theater earlier this year.
A Significant MAGA Turnout

The opening night of Les Mis saw a star-studded MAGA turnout: Vice President Vance attended the event with his wife, and MAGA loyalist and conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer was also in attendance along with Attorney General Pam Bondi and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
A ‘Les Misérables’ Fan

According to reports, President Trump is a fan of the sprawling musical set in 19th-century France. He has occasionally played songs from Les Mis at his events. He has been heard, for example, playing “Do You Hear the People Sing?” — a revolutionary rallying cry inspired by the 1832 rebellion against the French King Louis Philippe I. Trump’s critics have pointed out that the uprising and protests seen on stage, where protesters clash with soldiers, are eerily similar to the current situation in Los Angeles. California Governor Gavin Newsom wrote on social media in this regard, “Someone explain the plot to [Trump].”
Trump’s Overhaul of the Kennedy Center

During his second term in Office, Trump has gutted and restructured the iconic theater and its programs to his liking, stripping what he describes as liberal ideology. Less than a month into his presidency, Trump installed himself as chairman, dismissed every Joe Biden-era appointee, fired longtime president Deborah F. Rutter, introduced a resolution to give him more oversight into program selection and appointed a loyalist, Richard Grenell, to the role of director. His actions sparked significant backlash among the performing arts community, with iconic productions like Hamilton canceling their planned stints at the Kennedy Center. Legendary opera star Renée Fleming resigned from her role as Artistic Advisor at Large “out of respect” for those whom the President fired, per reports. An estimated 10-12 performers from the main cast of Les Misérables sat out the opening night performance to protest the Trumps’ appearance. However, the president told reporters that he “couldn’t care less” because “all I do is run the country well.”
