Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic socialist nominee for mayor of New York City, is facing renewed scrutiny over his ideological background after videos surfaced of his father—a Columbia University professor—making controversial remarks linking American history, particularly Abraham Lincoln, to Adolf Hitler’s plans for the Holocaust.
The videos, recorded during a 2022 panel hosted by the Asia Society, show Professor Mahmood Mamdani asserting that the Nazis drew key inspiration from the United States, including policies under Lincoln.
“With the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln generalized the solution of reservations, they herded American Indians into separate territories,” he said, according to Fox News.
“For the Nazis, this was the inspiration – Hitler realized two things: one, that genocide is doable. It is possible to do genocide. Second thing Hitler realized, is that you don’t have to have a common citizenship.”
The remarks also included a claim that the Nazi Nuremberg Laws were “patterned after American laws.”
Mamdani further equated the postwar actions of Allied forces with Nazi policies, saying that both sides sought to create “pure” nations by removing minorities.
“When the Allies defeated the Nazis… they began to create ‘pure’ nations. To ethnically cleanse Eastern Europe of Germans – move them back into Germany,” he added. “One crime doesn’t wipe out another.”
Zohran Mamdani has not commented publicly on the videos, but the timing has drawn attention as he rises in name recognition following a primary upset in the city’s Democratic mayoral race against former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
He has often credited his parents for shaping his worldview.
According to a profile by The New York Times, Mamdani described his upbringing as “privileged,” highlighting that his household was deeply immersed in political discussion and international affairs, often shaped by the work and worldview of his parents.
His mother is Oscar-nominated filmmaker Mira Nair.
Critics argue Mamdani’s background is relevant in light of his own policy proposals and rhetoric.
At a 2021 Young Democratic Socialists of America conference, Mamdani told attendees not to water down their goals.
“We cannot afford to compromise on seizing the means of production,” he said.
In a separate appearance for The Gravel Institute, he advocated for the “de-commodification” of housing.
“If we want to end the housing crisis, the solution has to be moving toward the full de-commodification of housing,” Mamdani said, calling for the replacement of private developments with co-op housing, communal laundry spaces and shared food systems.
Mahmood Mamdani’s academic work has also drawn attention.
In a discussion of his book Good Muslim, Bad Muslim, the professor questioned the label “suicide bomber,” arguing that such individuals are no different than soldiers “whose objective is to kill.”
He has also been cited in academic writings as stating that Israel is “the logical conclusion of Nazism,” a claim referenced by the Washington Free Beacon, per Fox News.
With the mayoral race heating up, Mamdani’s political history and familial ties are expected to receive greater scrutiny.
Supporters call him a principled progressive. Detractors say his record and rhetoric reveal an ideological extremism far outside the political mainstream.
