President Donald Trump delivered sharp criticism against Elon Musk’s newly formed America Party, calling the third-party effort “ridiculous” and describing his former ally as having gone “completely off the rails.”
The confrontation escalated after Musk officially filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Sunday to establish his America Party, following through on threats made during debates over Trump’s recent government funding legislation.
The filing represents a dramatic escalation in the feud between two of America’s most prominent figures.
Trump addressed reporters in New Jersey while returning to the White House from his Bedminster golf club, dismissing Musk’s political venture entirely.
The president appeared visibly frustrated when questioned about his former ally’s political ambitions.
“I think it’s ridiculous to start a third party,” Trump stated with characteristic bluntness.
The president emphasized the historical success of the two-party system in American politics, defending the Republican Party’s achievements while criticizing Democratic leadership.
“We have a tremendous success with the Republican Party,” he said.
“The Democrats have lost their way, but it’s always been a two party system, and I think starting a third party just adds to confusion.”
Trump continued his assessment of third-party movements, noting their lack of success throughout American history.
“It really seems to have been developed for two parties. Third parties have never worked, so he can have fun with it, but I think it’s ridiculous.”
The president expanded on his criticism through a lengthy Truth Social post, expressing disappointment in Musk’s recent behavior and questioning his former ally’s political judgment.
He wrote, “I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks. He even wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States.”
Musk responded indirectly on social media, questioning Trump’s fiscal policies and expressing frustration with the government’s spending priorities.
“What the heck was the point of @DOGE if he’s just going to increase the debt by $5 trillion??” he wrote, referencing the Department of Government Efficiency where he had worked to reduce federal spending.
The Tesla founder then quoted from the science fiction novel Dune, writing about Trump: “Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total. Obliteration.”
The dispute originated from Musk’s opposition to Trump’s government funding bill, which the president signed into law on the Fourth of July.
Musk criticized the legislation for lacking federal subsidies for electric vehicles and adding to the national debt.
Trump defended his position on electric vehicle subsidies, claiming Musk was aware of his stance from the beginning.
“When Elon gave me his total and unquestioned Endorsement, I asked him whether or not he knew that I was going to terminate the EV Mandate – It was in every speech I made, and in every conversation I had. He said he had no problems with that – I was very surprised!,” Trump wrote.
During his role at DOGE, Musk had focused on reducing federal government size and scope, making the debt-increasing legislation particularly frustrating for him.
Musk announced his party formation on Saturday through his X platform, criticizing the current political system.
“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” he wrote.
The announcement continued with Musk’s declaration: “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
The relationship between Trump and Musk began cordially, with the president inviting Musk to stay in the Lincoln Bedroom at the White House. However, the Daily Mail outlined that their alliance deteriorated during debates over the government funding bill.
Musk invested approximately $300 million supporting Trump and Republican candidates during the 2024 election cycle, making his current opposition particularly significant for the party.
The world’s richest man could potentially influence the 2026 midterm elections if he commits substantial financial resources to his new political movement.
Third-party candidates face significant structural challenges, however, including varying state requirements for ballot access and heavily gerrymandered congressional districts that favor established parties.
Republicans currently maintain narrow control of both chambers of Congress, with 53 Senate seats out of 100 and 220 House seats compared to 212 for Democrats, with three vacant seats.
These slim margins mean even modest third-party success could shift control of Congress, making Musk’s political ambitions particularly concerning for Republican leadership.
Musk spent Sunday morning on X gathering feedback from users about his new party, indicating plans to deploy it in upcoming electoral contests.
He also directed criticism at Republican leadership despite their control of all three branches of government.
“The Republican Party has a clean sweep of the executive, legislative and judicial branches and STILL had the nerve to massively increase the size of government, expanding the national debt by a record FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS,” he wrote.
Musk concluded with a strategic metaphor, promising to disrupt the current political system.
“The way we’re going to crack the uniparty system is by using a variant of how Epaminondas shattered the myth of Spartan invincibility at Leuctra: Extremely concentrated force at a precise location on the battlefield,” he wrote.
