When the unlikely bromance between President Donald Trump and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk fell apart earlier this summer, many wondered what the true extent of the fallout might be.
Now, several weeks on, Musk took the shocking step of formally launching a new political party poised to compete with Trump’s GOP and the Democratic Party alike, as Fox News reports.
America Party is born
Though Trump celebrated the passage of the Big Beautiful Bill last week, Musk took the development as a sign that drastic action was needed to alter the political trajectory of the country.
The Tesla mogul declared the two-party system that has long reigned in the U.S. irretrievably broken, and he is now taking matters into his own hands to fix it.
Prior to announcing the new party’s creation, Musk hosted a poll on his X social media platform to gauge support for the idea, which he said is meant to counter what he says is a corrupt system that does not represent the interests of the American people.
With over 65% of respondents showing support for a new party, Musk did not wait long to take action.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it. When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” he wrote.
Party’s potential impact debated
Notably, Musk has emphasized that the new party is not planning to run a candidate in the 2028 presidential contest, but will instead concentrate on a few pivotal seats in Congress.
Even so, many are sounding the alarm about its potential to split the vote in a way that provides Democrats with an overall advantage.
Conservative pundit Shawn Farash warned, “Your third party will disproportionately take votes from the right vs the left and give the left an easier path to power.”
Others suggested that Musk’s effort would be better spent reforming the Republican Party from the inside rather than drawing votes away from it.
Trump’s take
On Sunday, Trump himself weighed in on Musk’s bold move, labeling the idea “ridiculous.”
In a Truth Social post on Sunday evening, the president expressed regret at seeing Musk go “completely off the rails, essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks.”
Noting his belief that third parties “have never succeeded in the United States,” Trump appeared confident that Musk’s new endeavor would not pose a threat to the system as we know it, but whether that prediction holds true, only time will tell.
