There are plenty of ways we can accumulate debt beyond just financial means. We can owe others things like forgiveness, respect, help, favors, and time, to name just a few. Paul the apostle shares that the only debt we should keep is love. That’s because we can always share more love! The more you share, the more you gain, and then the more you have to give back. We’ve been blessed with the love of God, so let’s share that love with everyone created in His image.
Sometimes we turn to God for guidance on how to nurture a strained relationship. Here is God’s answer: love! It’s natural to have concerns about whether we’re following God’s will. Show love to everyone you encounter, and you’ll be living out God’s law beautifully. To care for others, we need to cherish God above all else. It’s where our love comes from. By doing that, we take care of the first four of the Ten Commandments. From that love, we then extend our care to our fellow man, which inspires us to uphold the next six commandments, as love brings no harm to our neighbor (Romans 13:10).
When someone who follows Jesus is free from financial debt, they can joyfully give when there’s a need. When a financial crisis comes around, and it surely will, the believer stands out as a wonderful example of the benefits of being free from greed. Paul’s encouragement in our verse for today is wisdom from above. It’s both spiritually fulfilling and practical in everyday life.
Think about it: How much happier and more secure would you feel in your relationships and finances if you embraced this verse?
