Court claims of experiencing “psychological torture” and more appeared readily disproved as El Salvador’s president himself rolled the video on Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s time in detention.
The purported MS-13-affiliated Salvadoran national, affectionately known to corporate media as a “Maryland man,” had made quite the claim about his time spent incarcerated in his home country after being deported by the Trump administration in March.
However, El Salvador President Nayib Bukele appeared none too pleased about alleged abuse in his prison system, prompting publication of a narrative-breaking video showing Abrego Garcia enjoying gardening, fishing, playing soccer and even having access to video games in his room.
“Apparently, anything a criminal claims is accepted as truth by the mainstream media and the crumbling Western judiciary,” began the president’s caption of the montage that kicked off on April 16 with images of the Industrial Center cell.

But the man wasn’t tortured, nor did he lose weight. In fact, photos show he gained weight while in detention. There’s plenty of footage from different days,… pic.twitter.com/PzvLcCNzrK

The video that included scenes of Abrego Garcia watching television, working out and getting routine health screenings also showed images of Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen’s (D) photo-op visit to check on his “constituent.”
“But the man wasn’t tortured, nor did he lose weight. In fact, photos show he gained weight while in detention. There’s plenty of footage from different days, including his meeting with Senator Van Hollen, who himself confirmed the man seemed fine,” stated Bukele as a clip of the congressman included a response to a question about any indications of abuse, “I did not get that sense. Look, you never know, but I asked him if he was okay. He said yes.”
The president went on to ask, “If he’d been tortured, sleep-deprived, and starved, why does he look so well in every picture? Why would he gain weight? Why are there no bruises, or even dark circles under his eyes?”
Compared to what Abrego Garcia had reportedly told Van Hollen and how the video depicted portions of the Salvadoran’s time incarcerated in his home country, a court filing claimed a different experience upon initial arrival at El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT).
“Upon arrival at CECOT, the detainees were greeted by a prison official who stated, ‘Welcome to CECOT. Whoever enters doesn’t leave,’” the filing claimed. “Plaintiff Abrego Garcia was then forced to strip, issued prison clothing, and subjected to physical abuse including being kicked in the legs with boots and struck on his head and arms to make him change clothes faster. His head was shaved with a zero razor, and he was frog-marched to cell 15, being struck with wooden batons along the way. By the following day, Plaintiff Abrego Garcia had visible bruises and lumps all over his body.”
The filing also claimed that the plaintiff and 20 others “were forced to kneel from approximately 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM, with guards striking anyone who fell from exhaustion,” during which Abrego Garcia “was denied bathroom access and soiled himself.”
Court documents further claimed that Abrego Garcai lost about 31 pounds and that his transfer on April 9 had included “photos that appeared to be staged to document improved conditions.”
Despite the claims of the Salvadoran’s legal team after the man had been returned to the United States to face trial for alleged human smuggling and gun smuggling, social media reactions welcomed the evidence presented by Bukele as many concluded, “At this point we can assume EVERYTHING from the left is a lie!”
