Former Vice President Kamala Harris drew criticism after sharing a somber message on Independence Day and posting a photo that excluded former President Joe Biden and former First Lady Jill Biden.
On July 4, Harris posted a message on X, stating, “Things are hard right now.
They are probably going to get worse before they get better,” before expressing her continued love for the country and commitment to “fight for it.”
The image she shared was from a 2024 Independence Day event and showed Harris alongside then-Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff watching fireworks. Observers noted that the photo was cropped in a way that left out President Biden and the First Lady.
Link Lauren, a former adviser to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., highlighted the omission on social media, calling it “very symbolic.” He also shared a wider version of the photo showing Biden and his wife standing just feet away.
Users on X quickly reacted to the post, with one sarcastically questioning whose elbow appeared on the right side of the cropped photo.
Many interpreted the exclusion as a deliberate slight or symbolic gesture, as the New York Post reported.
Others criticized the tone of Harris’s post. Republican National Committee spokeswoman Kiersten Pels commented that she was “grateful we didn’t end up with a President who posts ‘things are gonna get worse’ on the 4th of July.”
Several commenters echoed that sentiment, with one writing, “Among other reasons, this is why you’re not President,” and another urging Harris to “just enjoy the day.” A fourth user mocked her signature phrase by posting, “America is unburdened by what has been.”
Radio host Mark Simone claimed, “Kamala sets a new record for the worst 4th of July message ever.” Others focused on her repeated use of the word “fight,” suggesting it hinted at future political plans.
One user speculated that Harris is “definitely running in 2028.” Trump ally Mike Davis also chimed in, mocking her with the comment, “Don’t stop fighting, Kamala. And please run again in 2028.”
Since her 2024 loss to President Donald Trump, Harris has remained largely out of the spotlight. Trump won all seven swing states after President Biden exited the race earlier that year, leading to Harris’s defeat.
In April, Harris gave a keynote speech in San Francisco criticizing Trump-era policies without naming the former president. The speech was delivered at an event for Emerge, a group that supports Democratic women running for office.
Polls indicate her political standing has weakened. A June Emerson College poll found only 13% of Democrats would support her in the 2028 primary, while 16% preferred former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
That marked a significant drop from November, when 37% of Democrats said they would back Harris. Other polls have shown higher support, though enthusiasm has remained mixed.
A March Morning Consult poll reported 36% support from Democrats and left-leaning independents. However, a subsequent survey from Politico and UC Berkeley found 36% of “policy influencers” were unenthusiastic about a potential California gubernatorial run.
Sources close to Harris told Politico that she plans to make a decision about her political future by the end of the summer.
