Elon Musk has been vocal about his displeasure with the “big beautiful bill” that has been working its way through Congress for months, but now that it has passed both houses of Congress, Musk has remained silent.
While the bill was debated for eight hours on Wednesday, Musk did not post on social media at all.
The one post he did make about anything political was at 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, when he praised Trump for his foreign policy wins.
“Credit where credit is due. Donald Trump has successfully resolved several serious conflicts around the world,” Musk wrote.
Public blowups
This came after several public blowups with Trump in recent weeks since Musk left the Department of Government Efficiency, where he identified tens of billions of dollars in wasteful spending and made recommendations to Trump agencies for cutting their budgets.
While Trump tried to remain relatively diplomatic, Musk posted over-the-top statements about Trump that he later retracted, such as accusing Trump of being in Jeffrey Epstein’s black book.
More recently, Musk threatened to start the America Party to challenge Republicans if the bill passed.
“No retaliation”
When reporters asked some lawmakers whether they thought Musk would go through with his threats, most said they did not.
Freedom Caucus member Ralph Norman (R-SC) said, “Elon Musk is a true patriot. He identified where our tax money went. For you, young people, you ought to be grateful that we had him. No one else had the bandwidth to do what he did.”
Norman said he believed “Elon Musk is for the country. No retaliation.”
Rep. John McGuire (R-VA) said that he believed Musk would move on to “bigger and greater things.”
Bill passed
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act only passed the Senate with Vice President J.D. Vance’s tiebreaking vote as three Republicans declined to support it for different reasons.
It passed the House on Thursday 218-214, with two Republicans and all Democrats voting against it. Trump wanted to sign the bill on July 4th, and it looks like he will get his wish.
The bill makes Trump’s 2017 tax cuts permanent and temporarily ends taxes on tips and Social Security, but it adds trillions to an already huge deficit, which is why Elon Musk doesn’t support it.
The stripping out of the EV mandate probably didn’t help his opinion, either.
