A 5-year-old girl in North Carolina is recovering in the hospital after a terrifying road rage incident that left her shot in the leg—and the bullet ended up lodged in her sippy cup, according to authorities.
The alleged gunman, 20-year-old Charles Stevenson Jr. of Raleigh, is now facing serious felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. Prosecutors upgraded the charges during a court appearance on Wednesday, where a Wake County judge ordered Stevenson to be held without bond.
The incident unfolded on Monday during rush hour on U.S. 1, near the U.S. 64 offramp and the Cary Parkway overpass. Ema, the young victim whose last name is being withheld for privacy, was riding in the back seat of her father’s Ford F-150 when a single gunshot tore through the truck, hitting her in the leg.
According to police, Stevenson was driving erratically and had reportedly just gotten into a confrontation with another driver. The father told police that Stevenson threw an object—possibly meant for the other motorist—that struck his truck instead. When he rolled down his window to yell at Stevenson, the young man allegedly pulled out a gun and fired a single shot.
That shot struck Ema’s leg and ultimately landed in her sippy cup.
“What an image that is,” said Ema’s aunt, Aubree Allison, in an interview with WRAL. “It’s nothing that you hope happens in your own life.”
Ema’s mother, Gina, said her daughter has already undergone multiple surgeries and will require physical therapy. “They found the bullet in her sippy cup,” she said, still shaken by the ordeal. “He was attacking another car, trying to run her off the road.”
A GoFundMe launched for the family says Ema has shown remarkable resilience in the face of trauma. “Despite this unimaginable ordeal, she remains in great spirits and is showing incredible strength as she recovers in the hospital,” the campaign reads. “This innocent little girl did not deserve this.”
Stevenson has not yet entered a plea, and the investigation is ongoing.
