(NewsNation) — Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was arrested by U.S. immigration officers and is being processed for extradited removal from the country.
DHS said Chavez Jr. had an active warrant against him in Mexico for his alleged ties to organized crime and trafficking weapons, ammunitions and explosives.
“Under President Trump, NO ONE is above the law—including world-famous athletes,” the department said in a post on social platform X. “Our message to any cartel affiliates in the U.S. is clear: We will find you and you will face consequences. The days of unchecked cartel violence are over.”
The agency also said in addition to the warrant, Chavez Jr. had a criminal record in the U.S. dating back to 2012. He was arrested for driving drunk and without a license. In January 2024, he was arrested for illegal possession of an assault weapon.
“The current allegations are outrageous and simply another headline to terrorize the community,” Chavez Jr.’s attorney Michael Goldstein said.
Goldstein said he did not know where Chavez Jr. was being held as of Thursday morning, but that they are due in court on Monday for his criminal charges.
Chavez Jr. was still in the country following his fight against American boxer Jake Paul, which took place on Saturday. DHS said he was arrested by officers on Wednesday in Los Angeles.
