A heartbreaking tragedy in Ohio has led to the arrest of two adults after a 2-year-old girl was found dead in an apartment complex just north of Cincinnati.
On July 1, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a press release that it is actively investigating the death of the toddler, who was found unresponsive at the Timber Ridge Apartment Complex. Emergency responders arrived to find the child not breathing. Despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The child’s body was later transported to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office, where an autopsy determined her cause of death was suffocation, according to local outlets WKRC-TV and WLWT-TV.
Two people—identified by authorities as the child’s mother, Tien Hawkins, 25, and her boyfriend, Brian Moser, 23, who also goes by Terry Smith III—have been arrested and charged with child endangerment. They are currently being held at the Adams County Jail.
Adams County Prosecutor Aaron Haslam told WKRC-TV that while the case has not yet been classified as a homicide, further charges could be added pending the investigation. Authorities are also investigating injuries found on two other children in the home—a one-year-old and a five-year-old.
“We’re getting statements from the other two children… trying to figure out where their injuries came from, what caused those injuries,” Haslam said.
According to WKRC-TV, the 911 call that launched the investigation came from Moser, who told the dispatcher, “I believe she’s all the way gone. I don’t know if they suffocated last night or what’s going on… She’s dead. We woke up and found her.”
Adams County Sheriff Kenneth Dick emphasized that authorities have not yet determined whether the suffocation was intentional or accidental. “Whether a true act or just an accident, we don’t know at this point,” he said. “But the bottom line is a two-year-old child has been lost, and our prayers go out to the family.”
Neighbors who knew the child are now mourning her sudden death. Ciara Thurman told WKRC-TV the toddler “had the biggest heart… just smiley, happy.” Another neighbor, Kelie Proffitt, described her as “a cute little sweet girl who loved to play outside and always had a smile on her face.”
The investigation remains ongoing.
