An Indiana teen has been arrested and charged with murder months after a man was shot to death in what investigators say was a crime driven by jealousy.
Jeremy Jett, 19, is accused of gunning down 26-year-old Darius Timberlake after allegedly walking in on him in bed with Jett’s girlfriend back in April. According to court documents obtained by local news outlets, Jett’s girlfriend told police he was “jealous” and enraged over suspicions she was cheating.
The deadly shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. on April 23 in Lawrence, Indiana. Officers responded to a call at a private residence and found Timberlake dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. At the time, police detained someone for questioning but didn’t publicly name a suspect—until now.
According to prosecutors, Jett went to his girlfriend’s home and found her lying in bed with Timberlake. That’s when he allegedly pulled a gun. A struggle broke out between the two men, ending with Timberlake fatally shot.
Instead of immediately calling for help, Jett reportedly waited over 30 minutes before dialing 911. When he finally contacted authorities, he claimed the shooting was accidental.
His girlfriend, however, told police she didn’t believe his story. She recounted that Jett was furious and repeatedly accused her of cheating. According to the affidavit, Jett kept asking her, “Why are you laid up next to him?”
Detectives later uncovered troubling messages in Jett’s social media activity. Before his arrest, he allegedly told a friend on Instagram that he planned to say he acted in self-defense.
Jett has been charged with one count of murder and is currently being held without bond at the Marion County Jail. He was scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
