Zohran Mamdani pulled off the upset of the election cycle by defeating Andrew Cuomo in the New York City Democratic Party primary election.
Mamdani’s agenda is now blowing up all over social media, and as a democratic socialist, he clearly does not agree with Trump’s immigration plan, which is a problem because if he wins, there will be a two-year overlap in their terms of service.
Trump is already putting Mamdani on notice, telling him that he could be arrested if he decides to interfere in ICE operations as mayor.
You will be arrested
During his campaign, Mamdani vowed to stop allowing ICE agents to wear face coverings during apprehensions.
This is standard practice for law enforcement and is done for the safety of the officers, as is also seen when undercover officers are involved in operations.
Otherwise, their identities will be plastered all over the Internet, and protesters, or worse, will show up at their homes.
On Tuesday, Trump was asked about Mamdani’s possible interference with ICE operations, and he responded, “Well then, we’ll have to arrest him.”
Trump then added, “Look, we don’t need a communist in this country, but if we have one, I’m going to be watching over him very carefully on behalf of the nation.”
The president then did what he always does. He made a sensationalistic comment without proof of what he stated.
He said, “A lot of people are saying he’s here illegally,” which nobody is saying other than conspiracy theorists. Mamdani became a naturalized citizen in 2018, which he would not have been able to do if he were in the country illegally, especially since Trump was in office at the time.
Trump then threatened to withhold federal funding from New York if Mamdani is elected and he does not “behave,” stating, “If he does get in, I’m going to be president, and he’s going to have to do the right thing, or they’re not getting any money. He’s got to do the right thing or they’re not getting any money.”
Again, this is an empty threat because once the money is approved by Congress and passed into law, it cannot be withheld, even if that money was initially approved by Trump.
The only way previously approved funding can be cut is through a rescissions package, which has to go through Congress.
Mamdani responded, “His statements don’t just represent an attack on our democracy but an attempt to send a message to every New Yorker who refuses to hide in the shadows: if you speak up, they will come for you. We will not accept this intimidation.”
I fully agree with Trump that if Mamdani interferes, he should be arrested, but the rest of his comments are mostly hot air. This is how Trump helps Democrats and their narrative against him and conservatives, which is why I just wish he would stay on point.
When Trump had a targeted message, it hits great, but when he goes off on this sort of improv, it always seems to come back to hurt him, or the conservative movement. He needs to stay on point and just keep hammering away.
