The two hikers found dead last month at a remote campsite in Michigan’s Isle Royale National Park have been officially identified as a father and son from the Detroit area.
Bradley Baird, 30, and his father John Baird, 60, were discovered on June 9 at a backcountry campground deep within the park. Authorities have remained tight-lipped about the circumstances, but local reports suggest the deaths are being investigated as a possible murder-suicide.
Bradley was a self-employed writer, while John was a military veteran who had most recently worked in insurance, according to WLUC. The Keweenaw County medical examiner confirmed the identities this week after weeks of mounting pressure from local media outlets demanding transparency.
The bodies were discovered after two separate reports came in about deceased individuals at the same remote site. Park rangers hiked 11 miles overnight to the scene, where they found both men dead.
Dr. Michael McAllister, the Keweenaw County Medical Examiner, told MLive that it remains unclear who died first. A toxicology report is still pending, and for now, the cause of death is officially “undetermined.”
Adding to the mystery, officials from Keweenaw County say the FBI has asked them not to release details about the case to avoid compromising the ongoing investigation. That silence has led to growing speculation and frustration from the public.
Rumors have also swirled online. According to local Fox 9, a Reddit user claiming to have been camping in the area the same night reported hearing disturbing sounds coming from near the Bairds’ site.
The camper described hearing what sounded like a latrine door slamming, followed by “repetitive” yelling and “threats of self-harm and violence toward others.” The user said they could still hear the screams even after hiking half a mile away.
The National Parks Service has maintained that there is “no known threat to the public,” but has offered little else, fueling more questions than answers in a case that remains clouded in mystery.
No additional details have been released, and officials say the investigation is ongoing.
