Television personality Dr. Phil McGraw delivered a blistering critique of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) on Monday, condemning what he characterized as her repeated anti-American statements.
The confrontation stems from Omar’s recent appearance on “Democracy Now!” where she made controversial remarks about the United States.
Omar declared that America was becoming “one of the worst countries” during the June 13 interview while criticizing the Army’s upcoming 250th anniversary parade scheduled for June 14.
Dr. Phil addressed Omar’s comments during his show “The Real Story,” where he expressed outrage at the congresswoman’s rhetoric.
He argued that Omar should demonstrate greater appreciation for the country that provided her refuge and opportunities.
The television host began his critique by outlining Omar’s personal history and journey to America.
He noted that Omar had fled Somalia, describing it as a failed state plagued by civil war, corruption and widespread poverty.
“You can’t make this up. Who are we talking about here? Omar fled Somalia — a failed state, a country ravaged by civil war, corruption and poverty — and she spent years in a Kenyan refugee camp,” Dr. Phil stated during his program.
He continued by acknowledging the difficult circumstances Omar faced before arriving in the United States.
Dr. Phil expressed sympathy for her early experiences while emphasizing the contrast with her current situation.
“I hate that for her. I really do. She resettled in the U.S. as a refugee — so happy for her. She was given housing, afforded education, opportunity, freedom. She became a citizen in 2000 at 17. Again, so happy for her. Thank God she escaped that terrible life,” he said.
Dr. Phil highlighted Omar’s subsequent achievements in America, including her historic election to Congress.
He noted that she became one of the first Muslim women to serve in the House of Representatives.
“And she was elected to Congress, one of the first Muslim women in the House. The American Dream,” he continued.
“She has every reason to be thankful. Is she? Not even almost! Instead, she spends her time bashing the very country that saved her and her family.”
The television personality did not mince words when describing his assessment of Omar’s public statements.
He characterized her rhetoric using particularly strong language while acknowledging her constitutional rights.
Dr. Phil labeled Omar’s comments as “disgusting” while simultaneously defending her right to express such views.
He emphasized the distinction between legal rights and cultural appropriateness in his criticism.
“She has the right to say what she’s saying. Culturally, psychologically, I think it’s disgusting. But does she have the right to say it? Yeah, she does — just like I have the right to say it’s absolutely disgusting!” he declared.
His criticism extended beyond Omar’s recent comments to include her constituents and electoral prospects.
Dr. Phil suggested that voters should reconsider their support for the congresswoman based on her public statements.
“And whoever voted for her now knows who they voted for and should kick her a** to the curb!” he added during his on-air commentary.
Dr. Phil also referenced previous controversial statements made by Omar, including a 2021 social media post that drew widespread criticism.
In that June 2021 tweet, Omar made comparisons between various international entities and their actions.
“We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the U.S., Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban,” she wrote in the disputed tweet.
The television host described Omar’s inclusion of America alongside terrorist organizations as fundamentally problematic.
He characterized her comparison as irrational and inappropriate given the stark differences between these entities.
Dr. Phil called it “crazy talk” for Omar to include America in her enumeration of groups allegedly committing horrific acts.
He suggested that such comparisons demonstrated a fundamental misunderstanding of moral equivalencies.
The critique also encompassed Omar’s previous characterization of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Dr. Phil referenced her 2019 speech to the Council on American-Islamic Relations where she used particular phrasing to describe the attacks.
During that CAIR speech, Omar referred to the terrorist attacks by saying “some people did something” when discussing the events of September 11.
This phrasing generated significant controversy and criticism at the time.
Dr. Phil expressed particular disdain for this characterization of the terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 Americans.
He viewed her word choice as minimizing the significance and impact of the tragic events.
“Really? ‘Some people did something’? Way to stand up for your country,” Dr. Phil said, employing sarcasm to emphasize his disapproval of Omar’s previous comments.
