Vice President JD Vance, a steadfast pro-life advocate, cast a historic tie-breaking vote in the Senate on Tuesday to defund Planned Parenthood, stripping the nation’s largest abortion company of federal Medicaid reimbursements.
The move, a cornerstone of America’s pro-life agenda, marks a significant victory for activists seeking to redirect taxpayer funds to community health centers that do not perform abortions. The Senate vote, split 50-50 along party lines, required Vance’s intervention as the chamber’s presiding officer to pass the budget reconciliation bill, which eliminates approximately $700 million in annual federal funding to Planned Parenthood and its affiliates.
And it’s a reaffirmation of Vance’s longstanding pro-life views.

“I want more babies in the United States of America,” Vance declared at the 2025 March for Life rally in January, a sentiment that underscored his commitment to protecting unborn life as he cast the decisive vote.
National Right to Life praised the vice-president for his tie-break vote.
“The One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed in the Senate 51-50 following intense debate and negotiation. Vice President J.D. Vance cast the tie-breaking vote. The bill blocks taxpayer dollars from flowing to organizations that perform or promote abortion, including Planned Parenthood, for one year,” it explained.
Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life, said the vote “is a monumental step forward for unborn children and their mothers. We thank every pro-life senator who stood firm in defense of innocent human life and voted to direct federal tax dollars away from the abortion industry.”
“Women deserve compassionate care that supports both mother and child. This bill is a strong affirmation that we can and must build a culture that supports mother and child and rejects abortion,” Tobias continued.
“We are especially grateful to Senate leadership for ensuring this life-saving provision remained intact throughout the legislative process. We thank Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Majority Whip John Barrasso and Chief Deputy Whip Mike Crapo for their leadership on this issue. Their resolve reflects the will of millions of Americans who do not want their hard-earned tax dollars used to subsidize the abortion industry,” she added.
Vance, 40, has emerged as a prominent voice in the pro-life movement since his election as Ohio’s junior senator in 2022. His journey to this position is rooted in a personal and spiritual transformation detailed in his 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy. Raised in Middletown, Ohio, amid poverty and family instability, Vance was shaped by his grandmother, “Mamaw,” a devout Christian who instilled values of resilience and faith. His 2019 conversion to Catholicism further solidified his alignment with pro-life principles, as he told The American Conservative, “My views on public policy and what the optimal state should look like are pretty aligned with Catholic social teaching.”
As a senator, Vance consistently opposed abortion, voting against Democratic-led legislation to codify abortion and speaking out against the Biden administration’s policies promoting abortion.
During an oversight hearing, he called out corporate CEOs for supporting abortion activism, emphasizing his belief that “the question to me is really about the baby,” as he stated in a 2021 interview with Spectrum News in Columbus. He advocated for redirecting federal funds to support pregnancy healthcare and family formation, praising policies like those of Hungary’s Viktor Orbán that incentivize childbirth.
In 2022, he expressed support for a national abortion ban, stating on a podcast, “I certainly would like abortion to be illegal nationally.”
