Three former senior staff members at the hospital where child serial killer Lucy Letby once worked have been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter — a major development in the ongoing investigation into how her horrific crimes went unchecked.
According to Cheshire police, the individuals were part of the leadership team at the Countess of Chester Hospital during 2015-2016, the same period when Letby murdered seven infants and attempted to kill several others in the neonatal unit.
The arrests took place on June 30. While the names of those taken into custody have not been released, authorities say all three have since been released on bail while “further enquiries” continue.
Detective Superintendent Paul Hughes clarified that the new arrests “do not impact on the convictions of Lucy Letby,” who is already serving multiple life sentences. The former neonatal nurse was first convicted in August 2023, and later received her 15th life sentence in July 2024 following a retrial in a separate attempted murder case.
The investigation into the hospital’s role began in October 2023, when Cheshire Constabulary launched a corporate manslaughter probe focused on leadership decisions and whether criminal negligence contributed to the rising infant death toll. That probe was expanded in March 2025 to include individual charges of gross negligence manslaughter.
“This focuses on the grossly negligent action or inaction of individuals,” police said in a statement.
Letby was initially arrested back in 2018, and twice more before finally being charged. During her trial, which began in 2022, several colleagues described disturbing behavior and raised concerns about her conduct. Prosecutors revealed she had injected air into infants’ bloodstreams, force-fed milk, and falsified records.
Authorities also confirmed that the investigation isn’t limited to the Countess of Chester Hospital — it now includes the Liverpool Women’s Hospital as well, where Letby had also trained and worked briefly. The timeline under review spans from 2012 to 2016.
While the public has been focused on Letby herself, this latest twist signals that investigators are now asking tougher questions about whether hospital leadership failed to act — or turned a blind eye — as the infant deaths piled up.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more details become available.
