LAS VEGAS, NV – A Clark County student was arrested with an AR-15 rifle just before the school year ended, officials revealed. The student reportedly planned to steal cars with friends after school. This incident, which occurred on April 14, is under investigation by education authorities and local law enforcement.
Clark County School Police were patrolling a neighborhood near Swen State Middle School when they encountered three children. One of the children allegedly led officers on a brief chase before being apprehended. Witnesses reported seeing one child discard a rifle into nearby bushes, where officers later recovered a Ruger AR-15 with a magazine containing 28 rounds.
The arrest report indicates that the student might have had the firearm during school hours. One of the children confessed plans to steal cars after school, leading to the student’s arrest on multiple charges, including carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. The incident was categorized as occurring off school property.
From August of last year to May, officers seized a total of 36 firearms. In February, parents expressed concerns at a school board meeting after a student brought a gun to Tom Williams Elementary School. The community remains anxious about potential safety threats.
Newly appointed CCSD Superintendent Joan Eert addressed safety concerns, highlighting ongoing efforts to enhance security measures, including metal detectors and alert systems. Eert assured that every faculty member now has access to these safety tools, with plans to expand security measures from middle to elementary schools.
A February survey indicated that just over half of Swen State Middle School students felt safe. The district aims to improve this sentiment by continuing to implement best practices in school security.
It’s noteworthy that CCSD police reported a decrease in the number of guns seized compared to the previous year, signaling potential progress in addressing safety issues.
