Michigan Democrat Rep. Rashida Tlaib remains defiant in her opposition to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) even amid growing concerns about national security and recent protests in Los Angeles.
When confronted by independent investigative reporter Nicholas Ballasy at the Capitol about whether she would tone down her rhetoric following the unrest, Tlaib doubled down.
She emphasized her experience representing a border community in Detroit and recounted allegations of ICE agents violating constitutional rights. It’s not anti-ICE, it’s pro-constitutional rights, pro-due process, she insisted, adding that immigrant communities have viewed ICE as a rogue agency since its creation in 2003. Pressed on whether calls to abolish ICE go too far, Tlaib answered simply that it is not for her.
A critical role in national security continues to be fulfilled by ICE. This week, agents detained 11 Iranian nationals, among them Ribvar Karimi, who had previously served as a sharpshooter in Iran’s elite military unit, while Karimi was taken into custody in Alabama while on a K-1 visa, a status violated due to failure to adjust his legal residency, and the arrest came amid heightened tensions following recent U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, with federal officials issuing warnings about potential retaliatory terrorism threats on U.S. soil.
It was stated by DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin that, under Secretary Noem, DHS has been operating at full capacity to identify and apprehend known or suspected terrorists and violent extremists. She added that military operations are not waited for before action is taken; rather, President Trump’s mandate to secure the homeland is proactively fulfilled. The detention of individuals like Karimi highlights the ongoing importance of ICE’s enforcement work despite calls from some lawmakers to dismantle the agency.
