CHICAGO, IL – Mayor Brandon Johnson visited Douglas Park Friday morning, meeting with park staff, children, and families. This visit followed a tragic shooting that occurred Thursday evening, leaving a 15-year-old dead and a 14-year-old critically injured. The younger victim is reportedly related to Laquan McDonald, who was fatally shot by Chicago police in 2014. The boy’s uncle, Pastor Marvin Hunter of Grace Memorial Baptist Church, has also been involved in the aftermath.
According to a police report, the alleged shooter is a lifeguard employed by the Chicago Park District. The report indicates that an altercation ensued when the lifeguard suspected the teens were attempting to steal his bicycle, leading to the shooting. The lifeguard is noted to have a concealed carry license.
In response to the incident, the Chicago Park District released a statement emphasizing that Douglas Park remains a vibrant community hub. The statement reassured residents that safety and community connection are top priorities as they move forward.
The pool at Douglas Park was closed Friday out of respect for those affected by the shooting. Summer camps, however, continued as planned with support from counselors and staff for the children attending.
Mayor Johnson, along with Park District Superintendent Carlos Ramirez-Rosa and Alderwoman Monique Scott, expressed their commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community. Their meeting with staff and counselors aimed to provide reassurance and support during this difficult time.
While the park district maintains its stance on community safety, residents remain on edge as they await further details from the ongoing investigation by the Chicago Police Department. No additional information has been released regarding potential arrests or charges.
The shooting has reignited concerns about safety in public spaces, prompting city officials to review security measures and engage with community members on potential improvements.
As the investigation continues, city leaders are urging the community to come together to foster an environment of peace and solidarity in the face of tragedy.
