Marriage can be tough.
Everyone knows that feeling when you’ve had a big fight with your spouse and need some space to cool off.
But this Florida man chose burglary over facing his angry wife – and the reason will leave you speechless.
Real-life Goldilocks breaks into stranger’s home for four-day staycation
Jocelyn Charles, 44, from Davenport, Florida, found himself in hot water with his wife after a heated argument.
Instead of sleeping on the couch or taking a walk around the block like most married folks do, Charles decided to break into a complete stranger’s house and make himself at home.
For four whole days.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office received a call on June 9 when a neighbor noticed lights mysteriously turning on and off in a rental property that was supposed to be empty.
The homeowner had asked his neighbor to keep an eye on the place while he was away, and that neighbor definitely earned his keep.
When deputies arrived around 10 p.m., they discovered Charles inside the house cooking dinner and preparing to take a relaxing bath.
The stove was on, lights were blazing throughout the house, and Charles had even plugged his cell phone into the wall to charge.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post, “Deputies went to the residence and found Joe inside, cooking, and he had just finished filling the tub for a bath.”
Charles admitted to officers that he had no permission to be in the house and didn’t even know who owned it.
Four days of unauthorized spa treatment
Charles told deputies he had been living in the residence for approximately four days, using the water and electricity without the homeowner’s authorization.
His reason for the elaborate break-in scheme was simple but stunning.
He had gotten into a fight with his wife four days earlier and was too afraid to go home and face her wrath.
So instead of dealing with his marital problems like an adult, Charles decided that breaking and entering was the better option.
According to the sheriff’s office statement, “Joe told deputies that he had gotten in a fight with his wife, and he didn’t want to go home, so he chose to burglarize someone else’s home instead.”
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office couldn’t resist making jokes about the bizarre situation, filling their Facebook announcement with references to Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
The sheriff’s office joked in their Facebook post, “We assume the bath temperature was not too hot, nor too cold, but juuuuust right.”
They even created a humorous hashtag for the arrest: “#IfJoeIsConvictedHeWillSpendTimeBehindTheGuiltyLocksAndTheThreeBars.”
From domestic dispute to felony charges
Charles now faces serious legal consequences for his four-day unauthorized staycation.
He’s been charged with unarmed burglary, a felony, and petit theft, a misdemeanor.
Charles is being held on a $10,000 bond for the burglary charge and a $250 bond for the theft charge.
According to court records, Charles has no prior theft arrests, making this bizarre incident even more surprising.
The whole situation could have been avoided if Charles had just faced the music at home instead of turning to a life of crime to avoid his wife’s anger.
Now instead of dealing with one angry wife, Charles has to deal with angry prosecutors, judges, and potentially angry inmates if he’s convicted.
This case serves as a perfect reminder that sometimes the cure is worse than the disease.
Charles thought he was escaping his problems by hiding out in someone else’s house, but all he did was create much bigger problems for himself.
Most people would agree that a few days on the couch or at a friend’s house would have been a much smarter choice than breaking into a stranger’s home and risking felony charges.
The homeowner is probably just grateful that Charles was more interested in cooking dinner and taking baths than stealing valuable property.
This Florida man’s story will definitely go down as one of the more creative ways someone has tried to avoid going home after a marital spat.
But creativity doesn’t count for much when you’re facing burglary charges and a hefty bond.
Charles learned the hard way that sometimes you just have to face the music, even when the music is an angry spouse waiting at home.
