A former political candidate from Brunswick County has been arrested after allegedly threatening to kill more than 40 North Carolina lawmakers in response to legislation affecting the shrimping industry.
Anthony Wayne Street, 44, was taken into custody on June 19 through cooperation between the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), according to an official statement from the SBI. He faces charges of communicating threats to a legislative agent or court official following an investigation into multiple violent messages reportedly posted on social media targeting members of the North Carolina General Assembly.
The threats have since been deleted, but included threats to kill named lawmakers, even referencing the recent assassination of Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, John. Authorities say Street claimed to be acting in retaliation for proposed restrictions on inland shrimping, a contentious issue that has pitted lawmakers and chambers against each other in recent days.
Among those directly threatened was Sen. Bill Rabon, R-Brunswick, who chairs the powerful Senate Rules Committee. According to Columbus County News, Street specifically targeted Rabon, prompting law enforcement officials to escalate the case. His posts reportedly said that “all senators in Raleigh need to understand what happened to Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman in Minnesota can happen here in North Carolina.”
Street, of Supply, NC, was located and arrested Friday without incident. He appeared before a magistrate on June 23 who increased his bond to $25,000, after which he was booked into Brunswick County Jail. According to news reports, Street previously faced stalking charges in 2017 and 2018. He was also charged with resisting a public officer and disorderly conduct in 2017, but those charges were later dismissed.
Street has a long and complicated history with both North Carolina politics and the criminal justice system. According to Ballotpedia, he was born in Wilmington and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 2005, followed by a master’s degree in public administration from UNC Pembroke in 2014.
Politically, Street has mounted several campaigns for statewide office. Most recently, he ran for North Carolina state auditor in 2024, receiving more than 95,000 votes — about 11% — in the Republican primary. In 2020, he won the Republican nomination for the same office but narrowly lost the general election to Democrat Beth Wood by fewer than two percentage points.
The SBI has indicated that the investigation into recent threats against lawmakers is ongoing.
