Former Vice President Kamala Harris has been in hiding since she lost the presidential election, only making a handful of appointments.
While former VPs and presidents are usually tearing up the speaking circuit after they leave office, the demand for Harris and Joe Biden appears to be non-existent.
If Harris is going to save her career, she has to make a splash, and that would appear to be what she plans on doing, with rumors flying that she is about to enter the California governor’s race.
Time to enter
Harris has zero appeal on a national level right now, as is apparent in her lack of speaking engagements after the Biden administration was booted out of office, and she lost the 2024 election.
The former VP has not yet stated that she is going to run, so my guess is that rumors are simply being started to see what the interest of voters is in her running for governor in California, the only state that will have her right now.
One source stated that a lot of people are getting in Harris’ ear over this, telling her this is the next logical move if she is going to revive her political career.
According to a report in The Hill, the idea of running for governor has put a “glimmer” in her eye.
Even after her disastrous run last year Harris remains the frontrunner in California polling on the Democrat side of the aisle, but it is a rather weak field right now.
The top current candidate is former Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA), who has a mere 9% support, with Harris leading the way at 57%.
The other candidates are former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, California Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, and former HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra.
This has always been Harris’ race to lose, and she will need to raise her profile if she plans on running for president again.
With all the attention Gavin Newsom is getting right now, I don’t see Harris beating him in the 2028 presidential primary, so her best plan of action may be to try to be a two-term California governor and have a record to stand on in a later national election cycle.
If not, her time in the Biden administration will continue to haunt her, and her career will likely be dead.
Newsom has been pushing back against Trump’s National Guard deployment to California, and the liberal horde is eating it up. It has significantly boosted his profile, and while polling is still up in the air, as long as Newsom continues to play the tough guy, I think that will make him the favorite for Democrats once the 2028 season kicks off.
He will be able to transition right out of the governor’s mansion to the presidential election.
