A Kentucky mother is behind bars after allegedly attacking her 6-year-old daughter with a hammer in a brutal assault that left the child fighting for her life.
Zeinab Abdi, 40, was arrested by Louisville Metro Police on June 19 and charged with attempted murder after officers responded to a horrifying report of a child being assaulted inside a home on Wilson Avenue.
When officers arrived shortly after noon, they found the young girl suffering from multiple skull fractures and severe brain bleeds. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she remains in critical condition four days later.
The shocking details only deepened as police interviewed the girl’s brother, who reportedly witnessed the attack. According to an arrest slip, the boy told detectives he physically restrained his mother during the assault, and that she chillingly said, “Let me finish her,” while trying to go back to continue the attack.
Due to the extent of the injuries, the department’s homicide unit took over the case. During questioning, Abdi allegedly admitted to police that she often becomes overwhelmed with anger and loses control.
She then reportedly confessed to striking the child in the head with a hammer “an unknown amount of times,” according to the arrest documents.
Abdi is currently being held at Louisville Metro Corrections. Her bail has been set at $500,000, and she’s scheduled to appear in court again for a preliminary hearing on June 30. She has not yet secured legal representation.
This deeply disturbing case has shaken the local community and prompted a renewed call for vigilance in protecting children from abuse.
